This is my maternal great great grandfather : I am trying to solve a family mystery about James Cole b.1874 to Joseph b.1831 in Ruardean . He always told his family that his father's name was Thomas , but in all the censuses he is named as Joseph : did he lie about his father , or maybe was he orphaned and then lived in Joseph's house as his" son " ? I really need to see James's birth certificate , I guess : are you able to check out these registers ? I cannot get any further back than James who married Hannah - do you know any more ?

A birth Cert might help, I guess it realy depends how deeply the family was prepared to go if a "skeleton" needed to be hidden - assuming Joseph is not the Father.

Its always possibly Joseph had a pet name of Tom or Thomas, perhaps his middle name ?? The first born son was also called Thomas (?)

Looking through your data , it would seem that Grandpa Cole's father WAS called Thomas/Tom b.1850 and this Tom was the 3rd child ( b. 1820 ) to James and Hannah . I had not been able to find this link , as he did not appear in the earlier censuses that I checked : many thanks ! I think I may have found his death in 1878 aged 28 in Monmouth , which means he DID die shortly after my Grandpa was born in 1874 .

Tracing land and houses given in a will dated 1877 .

by rosalind@jmb @, Saturday, March 23, 2013, 09:03 (4256 days ago) @ slowhands

I am trying to trace the subsequent owners of land and houses given to my relative Joseph Cole by his father James Cole of Moorwood Coppice , in his will dated 1877 .
How would I go about doing this ?
Also , where is Moorwood Coppice ? I can see Moorwood on an old map , but Coppice is not marked .
I am thinking I will have to go to Glos Record Office maybe .
Any help would be gratefully received !

You could share the names on here from the will and maybe we can track down the land/houses for you
otherwise maps held at GRO or possible Dean Heritage might help. http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=39781

Jane and George Cole were given the house that they were living in , plus 3 pieces of land : open to F.O.D on one side , and the land of Thomas Beal on the other 3 sides .
Joseph Cole is given the house that he lives in , plus 4 pieces of land : one piece adjacent to the house , and the others as above .

George and Jane Cole appear to be living in Crossways on the Staunton Rd ( Berry Hill way) does that make sense ?

No but he would have been serving around the time of the Napoleonic Wars circa 1811
