Possible murder and name change of Meek surname (General)

by mariane, Monday, December 08, 2008, 01:38 (5902 days ago)

Hi from Australia everyone, my family name is Meek, but we believe there was a name change after a murder ? in the Forest o Dean, I was wondering if there is a list of crimes etc anywhere, there was a will but because the name was changed to Meek we cannot verify this, we do know it included land in Wales (where a lot of the Meeks finished up) was in the Will, eldest son to eldest son, something to do with a land grant, I did see many years back a hereldry book that stated the Abbotts of Cuper granted land to a Meake, any ideas where I start, the family names are Robert James Thomas John and Albert, regards Mariane Miller Australia

An idea of dates might be useful, however my first long shot is the MEEK / REED family of Ruardean Hill.

Scottish MEEK connection

by slowhands @, proud of his ancient Dean Forest roots, Monday, December 08, 2008, 03:30 (5902 days ago) @ mariane

A family of this name held lands from the abbots of Cupar from the middle of the fifteenth century. William Mek had a tack of part of Cowbyr in 1457, and Will Meyk was the tenant of Coupergrange in 1468. A Robert Meik was made burgess of Perth in 1545, and John Meyk was a Blackfriar of Perth in 1549. Margaret Meike was a resident in the parish of Borgue in 1684, and five more of the name are recorded in the Commissariot Record of Dunkeld. (This was the record of the commissary court which had jurisdiction over domestic relations).

Facts so far

19th April 1894, marriage in the Westbury on Severn registry office

Name: James Meek
Name: Emily Bennett
Year of Registration: 1894
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Westbury On Severn
County: Gloucestershire
Volume: 6a
Page: 429

Family names :-
Robert James Thomas John and Albert

Scenario 1

James "X" adopts the surname MEEK , then marries and tree becomes
established as MEEK

Scenario 2

James is born a MEEK.

So.....

Your belief is Scenario 1, so what I'd like to do is establish more about
Emily BENNETT, in the hope that it leads us to James and his family.
From this we may be able to narrow down the crime or myth.

Do you have the Marriage Certificate ?
If yes , does it contain more information, ages of Jame and Emily ?
(maybe just of full age or similar !)
does it name witnesses to the marriage ?
does it give any addresses for teh bride or groom ?
any hint at occupation of James / Emily or their parents ?
Had Emily been married before ?
Were either Widowed ? ( might be a hint of murder !)

If no, then I would urge you to get it !

Dont give up, you may be surprised that from a small amount of information and number of
deductions can lead to a very full Tree :-)

Hi,yes thankyou I do have a marriage certificate for James and Emily, date of marriage 19th April 1894
James was 21 yrs and Emily was 20yrs. at the time they lived in Cinderford, Emilys fathers name was Robert he was a collier, I have tried looking in the census 1891, but nothing came up,H Meek was one of the witnesses and E Hodges.thanks for your help,I am very grateful,as it is difficult being so far away, the story as it was told to me was that one of the relatives killed a man in the Forest of Dean, and then ran away and changed his name,we have never been able to solve this as when my dad died his sister would not relinquish the info, she took it to her own death,(my mother was not living with him at the time) because a will stated eldest son to eldest son, my dad died young and she became the eldest, lot's more to tell but I do not want to confuse, regards Mariane

I wonder if the family has "adoped" this :-

Name: Amelia Elizabeth Dyer
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1839

Amelia Elizabeth Dyer (? 1839 – June 10, 1896) achieved notoriety as probably the most prolific baby-farm murderer of Victorian England. She was tried and hanged for one murder in Reading, but there is little doubt she was responsible for many more similar deaths over a period of perhaps twenty years. She travelled alot Bristol - Cardiff,South Wales - Reading - London at least.
