Do you by any chance have any idea who the parents of Frank Malsom 316 & 203142 were? Also I tried looking Frank up on the CWGC site but cannot find him there, any idea why?

Frank MALSOM Pte.316 Herefordshire Regt.,Pte.203142 Royal Berks. Regt. I believe he was the son of Frederick and Alice MALSOM, High Street, Ruardean. The 1881 census records Frank, 11 months old.
The Roll of Honour will include all those from Ruardean who served. In the finished Roll I understand the names of those who died will probably be printed in red, and those who returned in black. It is still being compiled. Frank Malsom was not among the Fallen.

This list originally appeared on a website though I can't find it anymore. It was compiled, I believe, by Andrew Gardiner who was, at the time, a member of the FoD District Council. I contacted him back in 2013 as my father and uncle are on the list and I wondered where the information came from. Andrew wasn't able to tell me much other than the information came from an individual who he assumed knew my father. I never quite understood the point of the list.

If you're looking for more information on your grandfather's service record then there are places where that can be obtained though it depends on what service he was in. There's also others on this site who can probably tell you more than I can if you give some more information about who your grandfather was.

This thread was active a year or so before I joined the forum, I hadn't seen it before today, so many thanks Cally for the heads-up as my father's line are from the Ruardean side of the Forest.

On first reading this post I assumed that this Ruardean Roll was one of the many that was prepared by local Councils and such like soon after WW1, often while preparing a public memorial plaque or statue.
However I now see it includes names from WW2, which probably isn't your grandfather Cally but if it is then he would be more difficult to research online.

Sadly Slowhands doesn't appear to be around this forum any more? I got the impression from his posts that he was from, or had close ties with, the Ruardean area; could this Roll have been a project he was associated with ?. I then saw the post from Harry Brook, who I think confirms it is indeed a recent "work-in-progress" project, albeit probably referencing back to older memorials and such like. Hopefully Harry will be able to tell us more when he's next on the forum.

Fao PR Robinson; without wishing to pry, do I assume from your comment that this Roll contains details that wouldn't normally be available from a public Memorial, or other online sources ?. I presume you have researched your father and uncle to some degree, which are presumably WW2 records hence trickier to research, but if you need help please do ask. That said as I'm sure you know old newspapers often give information about Prisoners of War and suchlike.

I say this assuming that Ruardean does have a Memorial of WW1 vintage, but I don't know any details. A quick search online reminds me that Ruardean has a "War Memorial Hall", but I have no idea what plaque or suchlike it may contain.

There are Memorial Plaques within Ruardean Church, but sadly this site doesn't list the names.
https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/35711
https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/35712

There are six CWGC graves at Ruardean Church.
https://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery/cemetery/38580/ruardean-(st.-john-the-baptist)-chu...

Sadly this list which I found a few years ago when researching Cinderford's Memorial has no reference to Ruardean...
http://www.memorialtranscripts.co.uk/Compressed/gloucestershire_ww1.html

Searching this forum hasn't helped either altho' it has led me to find this excellent post about Ralph Howells of Ruardean, who is on Part 1 of the Roll.

Hi Jeff,

My father and uncle were in the RAF in WW2. Neither died or, as far as I'm aware, were wounded. Hence why I'm not sure what the object of this list is or was. Other than a list of people from the Ruardean area that fought in one or the other wars. It could, at worst, be misleading.

As far as finding information about people who fought in the war, service records are available, though possibly restricted to some extent. I keep meaning to obtain my father's. It's a fairly straight forward procedure as far as I recall when I looked into it. I think you maybe have to prove your relationship though so not just anybody could obtain it. But if Cally wants more information on a relative who fought in the war, it should be possible to obtain their service record - which is what I was suggesting.

Hi PR,
I think the object is to publically recognise, thank, commemorate, all those who "served their country" as they say. I've seen many examples of public rolls such as this, and personally I believe they are worthwhile, altho' obviously such views are entirely personal.
eg http://www.longhopevillage.co.uk/History/WorldWar1/

But yes, I think some clarity on it's purpose could be useful.

Yes, as I understand it, researching official service records from WW2 are more difficult: you must apply to the Ministry of Defence, must be directly related to the serviceman or woman being researched, and must expect it to be costly and also time-consuming. Certainly far harder than researching WW1 online etc, altho more and more WW2 records are becoming available. I've never tried to research via the MoD, but I do recall a few years ago reading about these enquiries taking several months, partly due to Defence spending cutbacks hence less staff to respond to enquiries. Hopefully things have changed now, and for the better. I have tried a little online research into my Uncle who was a P.O.W. in Burma, but not much luck there, not least as the Japanese didn't keep great records plus I don't think the Red Cross were involved anything like so much as in European theatre.

Ref your RAF ancestors, this is already quite "old" but MIGHT still be helpful

https://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/research/research-enquiries/useful-links.aspx

I can strongly recommend all the books in this publisher's series, luckily for me our local public library is the main one for our London Borough so carries most if not all of them. These are just some of those from their specia-list military historian.
