Angus Buchanan was the son of a Coleford Doctor.
He was awarded the Victoria Cross during the 1914-18 war,
when with great heroism, he rescued two wounded soldiers in the heat of battle.
During the war he was wounded three times, and lost the use of his sight.

At the end of the war, Captian Angus Buchanan VC returned to Coleford,
and then attended Oxford University where he studied law, and then came
home to Coleford to practice as a solicitor.

Funds were raised in Coleford to provide some form of permanent recognition to his
bravery, and when asked what form he would like this to take, he said
"Somewhere for the young children to play". As a result the Angus Buchanan Recreation
Field
was purchased, and iron gates were specially made, which incorporate the Victoria Cross.

Captain Angus Buchanan VC lived the remainder of his life in Coleford, and died there.
He was buried in Coleford Cemetery, next to the Recreation Field.

Captain Angus BUCHANAN VC 1894-1944 Coleford

Hi Slowhands

I usually keep up to date with the forum but have been away for a week or so and missed this entry. Very interesting as my grandfather Arthur Davis from Aylburton served with the South Wales Borderers and alongside Captain Buchanan in the Dardanelles during World War I. When my grandfather returned home he wrote to Captain Buchanan's parents expressing his best wishes following Captain Buchanan's injuries (I seem to recall that he was blinded?). I have the letter his mother sent in reply and an article from the local paper, but not on hand. If the article is of interest I could scan it at a later date.
