MUTLOW families in the Forest (General)
I have no doubt that there is a connection somewhere as you will see later in this post. I personally don’t have any concrete evidence that any of my family came or moved to the Forest. I should explain. I left England as a very young man for family reasons. I “lost interest” in my family background. It was for therapeutic reasons. It was only much later in life that I discovered that the man my mother married was not my father. Now in my retirement, primarily for the sake of my grandchildren, I have decided to produce my maternal family tree. They have the family tree of my late wife which is impressive with links to NED KELLY and the PLANTAGENETS. Mine is almost non existent. I have engaged the services of a friend who is a genealogist and the GSV (Genealogy Society of Victoria) to assist me in producing my maternal family tree and at the same time, I am trying to trace my real father. I will post any relevant information I get from the GSV to this message board.
DELVA IDA FREDERIKA MUTLOW was my mother. I have a certified copy of her birth certificate. She was born at 7 Beechfield Avenue, Hengoed in South Wales on 21 March 1918.
Delva married LEONARD HERBERT CUMMINGS in June 1940 and had 4 children – myself – the eldest, Robert Stephen, James Francis and Raymond Andrew. Leonard was not my father but he did father the other three boys.
HARVEY HUBERT CECIL was my mother’s brother. He was born in 1916.
Their parents were HUBERT ERNEST MUTLOW, below ground colliery repairer and IDA VALENTINE ANNIE MUTLOW nee SMITH. Ida’s father was WALLACE SMITH.
I also have a certified copy of HUBERT ERNEST MUTLOW’s marriage to IDA VALENTINE ANNIE SMITH. They were married at the Church of St Luke in Kensington on 3 August 1914. Hubert’s address was recorded as being in Gelligaer in South Wales and Ida’s as being in Finborough Road in Kensington. Respective fathers were MILSOM MUTLOW – Collier and WALLACE SMITH – Painter.
I’m not sure what happened to HUBERT ERNEST MUTLOW because I only knew my grandmother as IDA MORGAN. Her second husband (MORGAN) died when I was about 3 years old.
I also have memories when I was very young of my grandmother telling me about “family” in Ross-on-Wye and when I visited England in 1978-79 I went to Ross-on-Wye because my mother is buried there although she lived most of her married life and died in Reading.
You said that Maude Barrett may not read my post and I suspect you are right but I hope you don’t mind me saying why I want to contact her as it may trigger someone’s memory.
Before my mother died and shortly after the birth of our third son, she told me that my father was a PAUL THOMAS. I’m not sure if THOMAS was the surname or the man’s two Christian names. She really only told me because we named our second son Thomas and our third Paul so she thought I must have known all along about who really was my father. In fact I hadn’t known!
This PAUL THOMAS was apparently an Englishman who had gone to America with his father when his mother died, then came back to England and met my mother in 1936. He then went back to America because his father was ill. The father died in 1939 and PAUL THOMAS returned to England and resumed his friendship with my mother. There are two stories – one is that he did not return from an Airforce mission – the other is he died in a road accident. He apparently died in 1940.
When I saw an American – Maude Barrett – enquiring about the MUTLOW family name, I wondered if perhaps there is a connection. Probably unlikely but worth a chance. I have managed to track down a Maude Barrett in Marysville through Google and obtained an email address. Whether she is still alive or not, I don’t know but I have emailed her and I hope that I might get a reply.
