In 1975 the Wyedean Stages was born, with the inaugural event starting from
Watts of Lydney and using many of the stages that are used today. The winner
of that first Wyedean was one Graham Elsmore, a ‘forester’ through and through,
driving a Ford Escort RS1600. Elsmore went on to earn the title ‘King of the Dean,’
as he went on to win the next two Wyedean's, even beating off the late, great
Roger Clark in 1976.

he had been voted one of the finalists for the ‘Ford/Motoring News Rally Champion
of the Future’. Awarded with the National Rally Champion Honours in 1999 he has
been one of the leading Group N drivers in the UK for the last seven years.
He is now ranked in the top 20 in the UK.

Last year’s Wyedean winner Steve Perez will not be defending his title, leaving co-driver Paul Spooner (Raglan) to hitch a lift with Nik Elsmore. Coleford resident Nik has won the event twice and is desperate to match his father Graham’s tally of three which came between 1975 and 1977.
