Hello,

My name´s Geoffrey James Selway. I am the son of Enid Phipps, daughter of William George Phipps. Therefore I am the gr grandson of Thomas Enoch Phipps 1861 and gt. gt grandson of Charlotte Kear 1825 and George Phipps 1822. It would therefore be great to have information about the Kear family. (I know that Thomas Enoch married a Mary.... but don´t know her family name)

Also, does anyone have info on the parents of Thomas Phipps, 1794 who married Maria Birt. Thomas was the father of George Phipps, husband of Charlotte Kear.

I have also been searching for info concerning my grandmother Elizabeth Ellen Lee´s family (born 1877 and wife of William George Phipps)I have her line going back to James Lee(Lea)b.1806 and his wife Susannah James.

Other families connected are the Wintes, Hooks, and Morse family. Info on these families would also be great.

By the way... does anyone know the background to Rennie Phipps, husband of Freda (Morse) Phipps who wrote the facinating article about her early days in Stone Cottage, Yorkley ?. I cannot discover anything else about him other than he was Freda´s husband.

I have been researching my family trees for quite some time and would love to have any info which people can pass on .

Many thanks, Geoff Selway (Barcelona Spain)

Hi Geoffrey
My gt gt grandfather was George Phipps who married Charlotte Kear. My gt grandfather was Elijah who was the youngest of their children and moved to Sheffield in the early 1900's.
I have the parents of Thomas Phipps as George Phipps born abt 1748 who married Isabella James on 4 August 1777 at Newland.
I have also enjoyed reading about the early days at Stone Cottage which I found on this site and would like to know more about Rennie.
Regards
Anne

Hello Anne,

It was very exciting to receive your message. It was wonderful to find out about George Phipps and Isabella James.

I traced that Elijah went to work in the Sheffield area, but know nothing more about his life after that. I understand that he was baptised 20 January, 1867 at the Wesleyan Chapel. It seems he was boarding at Boarding at 62 Cricket Inn Road, Sheffield in 1901 although it seems he was married at the time. I don´t know who he married or anything about his children and life etc. As you are the gt. gt. granddaughter of George Phipps and Charlotte Kear, we are obviously related. I´d love to know more about your line and where are you based now ?. Perhaps you have some family photos, which I would love to see. Perhaps you can let me have your email address.

Maybe someone will pick up on our messages and know some information about Rennie Phipps of Stone Cottage.

Did you take a look at the website I am trying to create concerning my four family trees (grandparents) which, of course, include the Phipps family. : http://jamesel1.tripod.com/

As for myself, after being born near Neath in South Wales… I went to art collage and on to teachers ´college. I was the Head of Art in S.E. London and then moved to East Anglia before moving to Spain in 2001. Now I concentrate on my painting and am known as James Selway in the art world and some of my work can be seen on several web pages under that name.

I am really looking forward to hearing more about yourself and family and if I can help you in any way with your search, please let me know.

All best wishes,

Geoff Selway (Geoffrey James Selway)

Hello Geoffrey

Its now two years since your posting and I am wondering if you have discovered in the meantime where Rennie Phipps, husband of Freda Morse fits in. Rennie Phipps was born on 24 April 1904 and died in 1973. Rennie was the son of Samuel Phipps and Mercy Kear of Pillowell. Samuel Phipps was a stonemason and was born in 1862 Pillowell and was the son of another Samuel Phipps born 1832 in West Dean, also a stonemason. His wife was Emma Bayliss. In 1901 he was a Lunatic at Gloucester Second County Asylum where he died on 30 January 1902. Probate was granted to his son Phillip on 5 January 1903. Effects £651 12s. 1d. Emma died on 26 October 1900 in Yorkley and was buried on 31 October at St. Paul's, Parkend.

A brother of Samuel Phipps born 1862 was Thomas born 1857. His second wife was Elizabeth Jane Gifford who he married in 1908. Elizabeth was the daughter of Mark Gifford and his first wife Harriet Jones. Mark Gifford's second wife was Phoebe Morse, my great grandmother so Elizabeth Jane's half sister was my grandmother Damaris Gifford.

Freda Morse's grandfather Frederick Morse is the brother of my great grandmother Phoebe Morse. The Phipps family have many connections to the Morse family, which I have been researching for many years. I have the 1911 census entry for Rennie and his parents and siblings.

If you already have this information I'm sorry to be repetitive!

Hi Janet
My name is Bill Stratton, Geoff Selway was my cousin, his mother and mine were sisters, Geoff passed away quite a few years ago now, I do not remember the date. As I live in Australia, we only get snippets of news about the family remaining in the UK.
My grandparent were, William George Phipps and Elizabeth Ellen Lee, both of the Forest of Dean. They lived in Tonmawr, Neath in South Wales, where Geoff Selway was born. All of my relatives live local to that area to this day.
My wife Betty and I emigrated to Australia in 1966 and have visited UK a few times, we are now both retired. Betty has been doing the family tree, and is investigating the Stratton and Smart trees, and does a bit now and again.
If we can help you in any way just ask.
Regards
Bill Stratton

Hi Bill

I was sorry to hear about the death of Geoff Selway but at least it clears up a small mystery as to why his e-mails stopped.

We had quite a few connections in the family tree with the Kear, Wintle, Hook and Morse surnames and with the fact that I live just two hours south of where Geoff lived in Spain meant we had a lot in common.

I used to visit his website, where he exhibited his paintings, and he was obviously a very talented artist, his style was very unique.
