Work Houses in the Forest of Dean (General)

by Bryan, Saturday, February 14, 2009, 03:04 (5834 days ago)

Can anyone please assist me as to whether there were any work houses or similar institutions located in the Newland area, or in the wider area of the Forest of Dean circa 1890's.
I am attempting to trace children who were recorded in the 1891 census but not in the 1901 census, my first thought is that they may have been placed in the work house after the death of their mother in 1892.

Can someone also assist me as to whether ships still sailed from the quay at Chepstow to foreign parts like Australia at the same period of time 1890's.
If anyone has any thoughts or ideas however wild and far reaching I would be grateful for such input.

Hy Bryan, don't know if this is any help but I have just seen a death (on this site) registered in 1890 where the residence is shown as The Workhouse, Ross on Wye.

I've always been led to believe that there was a workhouse at Littldean , either part of , or attached to , the jail
My grandmother said that if she'd been sent there , as were some of her brothers , she'd have been taught a useful trade instead of going into service

Monmouth Work House needs to be added to the list. The Monmouth Poor Law Union covered the following areas in the Forest of Dean: English Bicknor, West Dean, Newland and Staunton. Much data on Admissions and Discharges survives in the Gwent Record Office in Cwmbran. Indeed, my great grandmother Harriett Morgan was admitted on May 8th 1889 from West Dean to give birth to her daughter Thurza Morgan. Thurza was admitted to the Workhouse on 5th July 1889. Most of us are born, Thursa was admitted!

Chris, thanks for bringing that to my attention. Monmouth has now been added.

Many thanks for your reply, it does open a few doors for me just to know from local knowledge that there were work houses, in or surrounding the area I am researching about. Whether there are any records available is my next challange.

Thank you for the links into the Work house sites, I will obviuosly have to pay a visit to the Gwent FHS for further information but at least I know that I will be able to find some admission records and hopefully what I am looking for.
