Richard WILLIAMS and Hannah READ/?PEAD? (General)

by Akeene121, Wednesday, February 18, 2009, 03:56 (5830 days ago)

I was sent a small section of a tree (ancestors) for my mum on which at the very top there was a Richard WILLIAMS and a Hannah READ.

I have searched through the records on this site and found a record for the marriage of Richard WILLIAMS to a Hannah PEAD[?] on the 22nd Oct 1794.
This is the same month and year as the birth date of the info given to me but two days before.
i was wondering if anyone had anymore info that could help me?
thanks!

Hi

I admit to being slightly confused by the dates you have mentioned, around 1794 for either a marriage or birth.

I have a Hannah Read in my Family Tree, baptised Ruardean 9th December 1792, parents James Read 1757 & Sarah Godin. They were married 4th May 1782, James Read being the son of James Read 1732 & Sarah Meek 1733.

When searching for Read's you have to note that the spelling can be Reid, also in latter generations a marriage took place between George Read 1785 ** & Ann Brown 1790. Some subsequent generations (not all) name themselves as Brown Read or in some cases just Brown. I have one case where the surname is different on his birth certificate and marriage certificate, which is bad enough but this was applied to his children, with some named Brown & some named Read.

** George Read 1785 was the son of Richard Read 1743 & Margaret. His brother was James Read 1732 mentioned above.

As a footnote to Jim's post George READ (or Reed) b. 1785 and Ann BROWN b. 1790 did NOT marry. I have a copy of his Will dated 3 November 1844 and in it he refers to his 'Housekeeper' Ann Brown and to his children e.g 'George Reed Brown commonly called George Reed...son of my Housekeeper Ann Brown'. This indicates why the family used the name Brown on occasion e.g when her sons Richard and George and her daughter Elizabeth got married. I presume to protect their mother's 'honour' in the eyes of the church (they were members of the Bible Christian Circuit). It may also be of interest that it is quite possible that Ann Brown was the illegitimate daughter of a Betty Brown of Goodrich. Could this be a reason why, even though she was baptised, Ann could not marry in church ?
