Hi colin
Thanks for the reply, yes this is the right Francis Meek son of John and Clare, but I don't think he married Rachel Vaughan as he would have been only 12/13 years old! Looking at all the information, my Francis either married outside of the Gloucestershire area or remained a bachelor. There is another Francis Meek who married a Rachel, which is where I think the confusion lies. I think the Francis Meek who married Rachel was born 1690, son of Francis and Margaret Lamb, according to IGI. An interesting fact about Francis and Rachel is that they both died on the same day and were burried three days apart in Ruardean, 1748.

Thanks, my info on Francis is pretty limited - I am descended from his brother George and not surprisingly have more info on the later members of the family.

I have extracted the following burial record from Bigland

Number 6

In memory of Francis Meek late of this parish who died 20 July 1791 aged 75 years. Also Sarah his wife who died in May 1762 aged 38 years.

So his wife was called Sarah and they had 4 children Richard, Mary, Sarah & John all baptised at Ruardean.

Francis MEEK 1716 - 1791

For a long time know I have been trying to find out the name of Francis Meek's wife Sarah, who was the mother of their four children, Richard 1751, Mary 1756, Sarah 1759 and John 1762. The burial details posted by Graham some time ago stated

Bigland Number 6

In memory of Francis Meek late of this parish who died 20 July 1791 aged 75 years. Also Sarah his wife who died in May 1762 aged 38 years.

This would mean his wife Sarah was born around 1724 and died obviously in 1762.

There is no record of a marriage of Francis Meek and a Sarah that would tie in with these children's births. However, today, after a lot of delving, I have uncovered this birth in 1724:
Year 1724
Month Sep
Day 13
Parents Surname RUDG
Child Forenames Sarah
Fathers Forenames Henry
Mothers Forenames Mary
Parish Chapel Ruardean

Then, going to 1762, I found this:

Year 1762
Month Jan
Day 20
Surname RUGE
Forenames Sarah
Officiating Minister Guy HILL/ Henry JONES/ William PARRY/ John EDWARDS
Event Burial
Parish Chapel Ruardean

The only flaw is that the burial for Sarah is January 1762 and not May 1762. Does anyone know any more? Could this be Francis' "wife" Sarah Rudge possibly, and they never actually married, or am I completely wrong?!

The baptism you quote

Sarah RUDG, father's forenames : henry , mother's forenames: Mary - 13 September 1724, Ruardean.

On FOD records, there is a burial at Ruardean - 6 September 1825

Sarah RUDG, daughter of Henry

One family connection here is that Francis Meek was the uncle of Priscilla and Joseph Meek and possibly Betty too - but there are several possible candidates for her and I only have details for one of them.

Colin

With so many Francis Meek's to choose from, you have to be a little more specific. I have 14 Francis/Frank Meek's in my Family Tree, but only 4 within a time frame 1655/1754. Francis Meek 1716 was the Uncle of Betty 1746, Joseph 1749 & Priscilla 1755, via his brother John Meek 1709 & Elizabeth Smart 1711. However, their brother George Meek 1714 & Margaret Teague 1718 also had a Priscilla 1753. Their brother James Meek 1711 & Elizabeth Rudge also had a Joseph Meek 1750.

The next question is which Priscilla Meek married John Gagg 1751 on 5 Sep 1775 - Witness Francis Meek & Joseph Harper (the latter can be ignored as he is a Church official). In my Family Tree I have this Priscilla as the daughter of George Meek & Margaret Teague. I have both Priscilla's in my Family Tree and my software can change entire families and all their descendants by the use of a few key strokes. Priscilla baptised 30 Sep 1753, daughter of George Meek & Margaret Teague is a 6 times Great Aunt. Priscilla baptised 7 Sep 1755 daughter of John Meek & Elizabeth Smart is a 1st cousin 7 times removed.

Jim

I take the point - but the thread is about Francis Meek (1716) and not any of the others (some of which I have in my tree though not all). Maybe I should have said Francis Meek (1716) was uncle to two Priscilla and two Joseph Meeks and at least one Betty.

According to the PRs Priscilla (baptised 7Sep 1755) was the daughter of James (not John) and Elizabeth (Rudge?).
I too have Priscilla (bap 1753) as the daughter of George Meek & Margaret Teague as marrying John Gagg.

Thank you - I stand corrected. Most of these baptisms from my early research were taken from the Bishops Transcripts, which are not the easiest to read - well that's my excuse !!

I have moved Priscilla to her correct family alongside brother Joseph. Do you know what happened to this Priscilla & Joseph ?

No, I don't have any more information. One could speculate on what may have happened. There's a burial for a Priscilla Meek (no age given) at Ruardean in 1766 and two Joseph Meek's in 1805 (age 55) and 1819 (age 69).
I think it's anybody's guess as to which is which - maybe we have it all wrong!

Hi Dragon, Colin, Marion, Graham & Others

I have been trying to get my head around the confusing, conflicting information published here and on the previous thread !!

I have cherry picked some of the logical information and have changed my mind about some of my earlier conclusion about which Francis Meek married Rachel Vaughan, more likely to be Francis Meek 1690.Following Marion's version of events, I agree with her that the parents of Joseph Meek 1782 were Joseph Meek 1749 & Ann Harris. Joseph Meek 1749 parents being John Meek 1708/9 & Elizabeth Smart, John Meek 1708/9 being the son of John Meek 1682 & Clare Bridgeman. Now we need to find out more information regarding John Meek 1682's parents John & Elinor.
