Whilst researching my Great Grandfather Alfred MEREDITH b.1866 of Little Deans Hill, In the 1891 Cencus I have come across a Phillip MEREDITH aged 62 living in Barnsley West Yorkshire, who was born in the Forest of Dean. As Alfred's family were living in Yorkshire at the 1871 Cencus I was wondering if there is a connection?
Does any one have any ideas, any help will be much apprieciated.

There are connections between Barnsley and the Forest of Dean because of the mining industry. My family moved to Sheffield due to the steel industry but at least one other relative went to live in Barnsley as he was a miner. Barnsley also had a glass industry which attracted people from far and wide.

Wales Wood is probably in the area, believe it or not on the border of Sheffield and Rotherham called Wales. It's a really pretty place with a country park but used to be a mining village. I live in South Yorkshire I will scan the telephone book to see if there are any of the surnames you mention in Barnsley or Wales.

There are 21 Merediths and 2 Meridiths in the South Yorkshire phone book. One of them lives not far from the village of Wales and there is one in Barnsley and one in Rotherham. The bulk of them are living in Chesterfield (Derbyshire)and surrounding N Derbyshire villages but these too are not far from the village called Wales.
