Jack and Olive TRESHAM Littledean (General)

by Lawrencef ⌂ @, Trentham, Australia, Wednesday, April 29, 2009, 05:25 (5761 days ago)

Hi

I'm attempting to locate information on:

Jack Tresham

Olive Tresham (I belive her maiden name was Olive Elizabeth Smith of Little Dean, she also became a Millard later on and later still ran away to Canada with a Captain Jospeh Caldwell (Royal lancers I think), he had two or 3 daughters to his commanding officers daughter already and they contacted my Grandmother some years ago (after his death in Calgary Canada). Unfortunatly she replied and threw out the letter). Olive Tresham also pretended to be Olive Beale married to Samual Millard at the Independent Chapel Littledean 1914. I have the marriage certificate which she used to gain a pension in Canada and am pretty sure its not hers. I am however pretty certain that she was born or lived in or near lItle Dean for a significent time during her childhood.

Lovell Glendower Tresham (I have located his existing military records as he ended up in Aust in the AIF 8th Div RAE, taken in the fall of Singapore, Changi, Burma death railway then torpedoed and killed by US submarine Sealion in 1944; Rakuyo Maru incident). He was born: 4 may 1906 GLOUCESTERSHIRE CHELTENHAM.

I'm not sure when or how he came to be in Australia but have him on the electrol roles here from 1930 and 1936. He married Stella Burton (I have her birth cert coming as she was born in Thrapston Kettering, Northamptonshire, UK and came to Aust in 1917).

I'd appreciate any insight or links to these people that anyone might have.

Regards

Lawrence Finn

Wow, thats fantastic... Thanks...

It will take me a little while to digest all this and figure it out into the larger picture and once i have I may ask a few more questions, but what you have donn is fantastic, so thanks. I feel so much closer to unravelling the mystery of my Great Grandmother. I've ordered LG Smiths birth certificate as I am sure that it is LG Tresham using his mothers maiden name.

I just spoke with my Grandmother and she asked me to mention the following in case it has a context here and might shed some further light on the goings on of Olive Elizabeth Smith.

My Grandmother says that her mother (Olive Elizabeth Smith)once told her that her real name was Cecelia. That she lived at the White house and her Grandmother or mother was a Lady Hyde.

Olive Elizabeth smith also told my Grandmother that she had a cousin called Cecil.

Thanks again your assistance has been a godsend. I really was stuck with the LGT birth certificate...

HYDE SMITH living Littledean

by Lawrencef ⌂ @, Trentham, Australia, Friday, May 22, 2009, 07:15 (5737 days ago) @ Lawrencef

Hi Slowhand

I'd like to thank you again for your help, and let you know that your hunch was totally correct (recieved the birth certificate today) for Lovell Glendower Smith (his mother is Olive Smith of Albion Place, High St Cinderford), and due to the other documents I have this is final proof that this refers to my Great Grandmother. I have applied today for her birth cert. Lovells birth certificate does not have a father or fathers occupation listed. I'm going to search as best I can for someone with the surname Glendower, in that area as I'm guessing that the first and middle names may have been taken in leu of a marriage certificate from the father (it's certainly a random name otherwise). Examining the census data you sent it seems that Olive did not marry for some time, in fact its becoming clear that she may never have legally married, although she married frequently enough, nuff said.

Olive Elizabeth SMITH 1888 Mitcheldean area Olive Elizabeth Smith Year of Registration: 1888 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Westbury On Severn County: Gloucestershire Volume: 6a Page: 241

I have spent hours digestng the information that you posted, and am amazed at your ability to track so many people at once, extraordinary; I am only now getting a fuller picture of the connections you made after going over it repeatedly then printng it out as a big flow chart.

I'm having trouble tracking everyone but think that the next people I'll pursue are Albert Smith and Rhoda Goode. I need to find out if Henry Goode was a blue baby (my Grandmother told me often that Great Granny had a brother who was a blue baby). Guess thats gonna be near impossible to find out though? Perhaps deaths, I think he died young as a consequence.

On another note, some years ago we stayed in Little Dean and my Grandparents walked down the road (probably to Cinderford) where they examined issues from a local newspaper. They came across a story of a woman who was shot at by her husband whilst seeing a man off at the train station (I believe he was off to the first world war). If anyone has come across that story or knows what newspaper that may have been from, please feel free to post me... My great grandmother had a clock with a bullet hole in it, which she repeatedly claimed had saved her life. I believe the two things are connected.

Any thoughts are welcome, and Slowhands I was serious about the xmas present (I recently printed an illustration from my my mothers great Grandmothers autograph book (1906-1920) an original ink sketch of what became a very famous tinker tailor soldier sailor cartoon image (of dogs in the roles, it will be familier to some as it was very well known back in tha day), I'd love to send you a copy of the print (I'm an artist printmaker so a coy means hand printed from the block))... Just a thank you thought really, you have helped me so greatly...

Regards

Lawrence

Lawrence

thanks for the feedback, it is appreciated - its always good when a hunch gets confirmed by other evidence.

This one was certainly one where colour helped highlight some of the people on different census data !

HYDE SMITH living Littledean

by Lawrencef ⌂ @, Trentham, Australia, Saturday, May 23, 2009, 07:20 (5736 days ago) @ slowhands

Hi

Think I've located the marriage of Thomas Goode and Elizabeth Goode (nee ?) seems they were married in Ross Vol 26 p 340 - 1842. I'll order it tomorrow as I'm pretty tired tonight (2am here now).

So as far as I can see it flows:

Thomas and Elizabeth Goode have a number of children inc Rhoda Minnie Goode (though it may still be that Rachel is the mother as there is a conflicting record) gives birth to Olive Goode (my Great Granny) who then has Lovell Glendower Smith 1906 (to an unknown father), Maud Olive Millard 1920 (to an unknown father) Patricia Marcia Millard 1926 aprox to Joseph Caldwell (I've confirmed with my grandmother that he was a Captain in the Royal Lancers) and they took off to Canada (he deserted his wife and daughters to do so).

Still many mysteries but I'm getting there. Thanks again for your advice.
