William COSLETT and Adelaide VINE (General)
by Hannah, Friday, May 01, 2009, 02:27 (5759 days ago)
Hello everyone :-)
I am researching my family tree and have got back as far as William Coslett who was born in 1823 and married an Adeline or Adelaide Vine(s) in 1853 in West Dean parish church. I seem to have come up against a brick wall and would be grateful for any help - William had a son John from his first marriage, born 1842 in France, who Adeline later married after William had died in 1859! I know William's dad was called John Coslett, but cannot find the Coslett family before 1851 and have no idea when John snr was born. I also cannot find the Vine family, and Adeline put 'don't know' for place of birth on the 1861 census and is a servant away from home on 1851! Does anyone know firstly what records of West Dean have survived and secondly how I can access them? Any other info at all would be a huge help!
thanks,
Hannah Thomas

Hannah, I have Coslett ancestors who came from the Llangyfelach, Llansamlet area near Swansea and moved to Gwent around 1820-1840, have you checked this area for your Coslett's? There are quite a few Coslett's in West Wales.

Coslett's were still living above Tintern not so long ago. I was in school with Roger Coslett in Monmouth during the 60's. I remember he had a cousin or uncle who played rugby for a top welsh side, maybe even for wales.
Just thought I would mention it as they are the only Coslett's I've ever come across, doesn't seem to be a common name. Fred

Hi,
I have a Coslett connection and have been trying without success to find anything further. My gg Grandmother was Hannah Jane Coslett born in Kidwelly Camarthenshire in 1865. She married Charles Edward Beard in Lydney in early 1896 where they remained until their deaths in1930 ad 1942 respectively. I've found her on the 1881 census but no other. I'd have thought Coslett would have been easy!
Sorry to forum moderator as this isn't strictly Forest of Dean although there is a connection.

Hello
In the last week I have been getting together information of the Cosletts in the Forest so I am new at this family. I am doing it for Neville Coslett whose brother was Dennis the famous Welsh activist and poet. They are travelling over there in June and wanted to know more about the families movements in the Forest.
I sent a request but have recently had some of these questions answered on this forum, thank you.
If you live in the Forest or Wales and are connected to this family perhaps you could get in touch so that he might contact you.
Thank you for all your help, couldnt do family history with you lot.

Hi,
I appealed for some help a coiuple of years ago in tracing my g Grandmother who was born Coslett and moved to FOD in the 1890s where she lived until she passed away in 1930. The help I received was fantastic and helped me a great deal. Although I have a great deal of information in respect of names, I still regularly look at the forum as I'm keen to understand more about life in the Forest rather than just having a list of names.
In terms of gatherting names as an exercise in itself, I hit a brick wall some time ago in the Coslett line. Unusual names are very much a two-edged sword. My ancestors came from Llangyfelach in Glamorgan - there's no census records or other records for them for 1851 or 1861 - and I came across the post below. I've been advised thast the person who posted it has since left the forum but if anyone can either shed any light on this branch or could contact Andrew I'd be extremely grateful.
In my research, I've not found any connection to the French Cosletts mentioned here although I did spend some time on a red herring trail when I first found them! It may of course be that there is a connection even further back.
As this is largely off topic, I'm happy for folks to mail me via the members list.

Hello Pogle
Yes I prefer to find out about their lives and occupations rather than just put names onto a tree.
The Cosletts I am concerned with seem to shift around a lot. One born in France, Monmouth, Carmarthenshire, Abertillery and Parkend in the Forest. I think the one in France may have just been a oncer, however in saying that I see that the origin of the name came from there.
I think that all Cosletts are connected so would not rule out anyone. At least I know that the family line goes back through Dennis Coslett's side.
Thanks for the info

John COSLETT born in France 1844 ish
by ritpetite , New Zealand, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 00:27 (4649 days ago) @ admin
Hello and thank you for any help already received.
I have since found out that William was in France in 1841ish and had son John Coslett by whom I dont know and not sure if William married the mother.
But thanks to Hannah I have found out that William married Adelaide/Adeline Vines and when he died in 1859 she married John her stepson.
I now want to find out where John was born in France and was his mother married to William.
And as a plus if anyone knows where William was born would be great.Could be wales
Thanks to this site for all your help

Hello Hannah
My friends Neville & Lorraine Coslett are visiting from NZ and may like to meet you or anyone else who may be interested in the Cosletts.
There doesn't seem to be a contact email that I can reach you on. So please reply to this and let me know how I can contact you.
They are in Wales at the moment.
Thank you
