Thomas Mason & Zilpha Chivers (General)
by Emma1, Thursday, May 14, 2009, 05:35 (5746 days ago)
I am trying to find some information on the above.
I believe that they married in 1828 on Feb 2nd but I am finding it hard to believe that Zilpha was a real name. Also need to find info of Zilpha's parents. Would this be Joseph and Amelia?
Am sure that there is a link from my Mason's to Winifred Foley but trying to unpick this is becomming a riddle!
Many Thanks,
Emma

'In the Book of Genesis, Zilpah is Leah's handmaid and the second concubine of Jacob and the mother of Gad and Asher.'
So yes Zilpah is a real name-Google is a wonderful invention!

Zilpah Chivers is my ggg grandmother, sister of Kezia mother of Ann, Jotham, Amelia and Noah. I have never found a positive connection to Winifred Foley. My tree has been involved 34 years of research and is fairly large. Are you related?

It looks like it - I'm sure Thomas isn't in the 1841 census.

I can confirm that Joseph MASON, was in fact a base child born to Zilpah MASON. This is my direct line - Thomas and Zilpah are my 3rd Great-Grandparents. I secured a copy of Joseph's birth registration from the GRO, and it lists no Father. In the "Name and Surname of Father" space is written "Illegitimate". No clue who might be the Father of Joseph. (Yet!)

Zilpah was the dau of Joseph Chivers and Amelia Baldwin and was born c1808 and died on 1 Jan 1871. I believe she had siblings Joseph, Elijah, Kezia and Jacob. Sometime before 1861 she second married a Philip Nicholls and was on the 1861 census living with Philip and son Noah and a daughter Charlotte Mason. There was also another son Joseph on the 1851 census.

On the 1861 census Noah Mason is recorded as a lodger - as is Charlotte Mason. There are emmumerators marks between them and Zilpah on the image. The Charlotte would have been Noah's wife, Charlotte Barnard (she is recorded as married) Noah was Zilpah's son.

Thanks for all of your replies.
Thomas Mason's father George married Mary Tippins who is my GGG Grandfathers sister.
I didn't realise that Ziplah was a biblical name, but thanks for all of the info.

The use of Old Testament names was something which non-Conformists, particularly Methodists, adhered to as part of their reaffirmation of the need to be familiar with The Bible.
