Mary (TINGLE) widow of James COWMEADOW (General)

by Carole Lewis @, Thursday, May 14, 2009, 09:57 (5746 days ago)

Does anyone know who were the parents of Mary Cowmeadow born Tingle the widow of James Cowmeadow. If she died in 1852 aged 74 she can't have been the child born in Lydney in 1773. She had her last child in 1826 so all the dates seem to be out.

Given that James (1786 ish )and Mary COWMEADOW nee TINGLE lived in the Rock area of Moorwood above Lydbrook - I have suspected ( but not proved) that this is Mary C ...

Thank you for your response Slowhands. Everything I know about my Cowmeadow ancestors I owe to you. I had assumed that the William Cowmeadow you mention was James' older brother. William married Mary Hatton in 1804 whilst James married Mary Tingle in 1807, being the off-spring of William and Elizabeth Cowmeadow. Have I oversimplified it? I had assumed that the Mary Cowmeadow reported to have finished her days in Cheltenham was the correct one if only because the Census for that household describes the inhabitants as paupers.

"too many" Mary's :-)

I think - but have not been able to prove that Mary TINGLE-COWMEADOW is the cheltenham pauper / death.

PS

did you manage to get a copy of David Perry's " Forest Roots" - its a one name study on the Cowmeadows.

The Boilermaker line is as far as I can tell a separate branch "focussed" on Harry Hill / Drybrook .....

I think this Elizabeth is the daughter of James 1813 and Martha Clayton, the Blacksmith /Boilermaker

Forest Roots

by Celia61, Sunday, May 17, 2009, 04:08 (5743 days ago) @ slowhands

I had a copy of Forest Roots out of my local library in Hampshire in about 1987, and subsequently had useful correspondence with Dave Perry regarding Alice Cowmeadow who married into the Harris family of Drybrook.

At that time he had been asked to do a further edition to include more reference to the domestic life of the boilermakers.

Cheers, Celia

I have discovered that my James Cowmeadow (who married Mary Tingle) was born in 1769 the son of James and Ann (b Evans). I have concluded this from having read his will made in 1821 just before he died. The strange thing is that he appears to have left land etc but his wife and children found themselves in Ruardean workhouse within a few years. Any ideas?

The Second County Lunatic Asylum was opened in 1884, funded entirely by the county authorities. The site at Coney Hill, purchased in 1878, was formerly the Barnwood Mill estate, and for a time it included a farm.

Barnwood Mill / Coney Hill - James COWMEADOW 1846 - 1905

by CraigCooper, Monday, August 30, 2010, 15:42 (5272 days ago) @ slowhands

Hi,

I wonder if you can help, I am trying to understand why Mary Ann Cowmeadon was living with Barzilla Meek and his family (Mick in the 1851 Census) in 1851.

I have read your threads and it looks like it could be to do with the death or admission to Barnwood of a family member.

Many thanks

Hi. Mary ann Cowmeadow who lived with Barzillai Meek was the illegitimate daughter of Hannah Cowmeadow who went on to marry Barzillai. Hannah was the daughter of Mary and James Cowmeadow.
