The manifest lists

as an aunt of (Name: Olive Elizabeth Smith

Marcia Patricia Millard

Not sure if I mentioned it clearly but Marcia Patricia Millard/Beale is my grandmothers sister, she died in Reno California USA 1986.

It appears my Grandmother changed her name before 1914 but after 1906 when Lovell Glendower Smith was born. I have a marriage certificate for that marriage but am convinced (and the paper work points to this) that it was fake and that my grandmother took the identity of her Grandmothers daughter (born 4 years previous to her in 1884).

I believe that there was an article in the local newspaper in 1914 (or close to) where a man shot at his wife at the train station as she was seeing a male "friend" off to the war. Does anyone know what newspaper that might be? My grandmother and Grandfather located it when we stayed in Little Dean in 1980. Also is there a train station anywhere near? My grandmother told me that they walked up the road to Cinderford (I think) and there was a newspaper office and they went through the old copies and found the article.

Just for my edification can anyone tell me the name of the old hotel/guesthouse on the hill (Broad st, I think) where Cromwell stayed and or the witches were burnt (vague memories of the stories about the place now but we stayed for a week or so while my Grandmother tried to find out about her mother). I was constantly being told that the place was haunted (I was 9 so I imagine that they enjoyed my response to the possibility and kept telling me)...

Littledean

If you stayed on Broad street then it might have been the George or Belfry as it is now known http://www.thebelfryhotel.co.uk/ or the Littledean House Hotel http://www.fweb.org.uk/littledeanhouse/location.htm . If it was the latter then you were 50 yards from the the Ruffett !

However there are few more in Littledean...

. at the top of the Ruffett on Littledean hill is the Royal Foresters hotel.

Not sure of the Cromwell link , but Coleford is where I associate Civil War events.

Littledean Hall is associated with Ghosts :-)

Cinderford had its own rail station, Station St leads from the Triangle down to the old Rail station site.( towards Bilson Green and Valley Rd) The line made its way, after a loop, south towards Cinderford Bridge / St Whites before leaving the town, or east from bilson towards Lydbrook/Monmouth, or north towards Drybrook.

WRT the old newspapers I suspect the
old Mercury office and print works at 3, Woodside Street, Cinderford.

Another husband... Arrrggh!

by Lawrencef ⌂ @, Trentham, Australia, Wednesday, May 27, 2009, 06:07 (5738 days ago) @ Lawrencef

Hi

Well your guess about Davis was interesting at first but right now I'm convinced your a genius because it led me directly to look at some different possibilities and it turns out that on the 1911 Census Lovell is living with his grandparents James and Elizabeth Smith and James is a county court Bailiff (they had 7 children, 1 dead) and lived high st Cinderford. I can't imagine that there were that many Bailiffs in the area...

I noted that Great Granny wasn't there so I looked for her in that census and found Olive Smith 22 married to Charles Smith 23 (coal miner) Church Road Cinderford. Perhaps there was another Olive Smith of the same age. I'll look tomorrow but otherwise the picture I'm getting is that this is yet another husband. She did say that she had done some terrible thngs...

I'll digest fully what you have written tomorrow, its late and I'm freezing...

Thanks again and I really really do want to send you that xmas present...

Another husband... Arrrggh!

And some more scandal

by Lawrencef ⌂ @, Trentham, Australia, Wednesday, May 27, 2009, 06:32 (5738 days ago) @ slowhands

I located the details on Millard, interestingly: my Greatgrandmother used to say "the brewery people are after me" when she started to lose it near the end of her life.

It turns out that Samuel Millard was a brewery manager, he was 59 when they married in 1914 she was 26.

Thanks for the sorry, I'm trying to figure out how I explain all this to my Grandmother without hurting her feelings. Deep down I know she suspected that the tale would be bad. It certainly becomes sordid later on with Caldwell leaving his wife and daughters so no surprise it starts badly as well.

Thanks again for your help...
