Croome - Hewelsfield 19th Century Stone Masons (General)

by DennisCroome, Wednesday, June 10, 2009, 01:07 (5719 days ago)

My great grandfather Daniel Croome (1830-1863) and my great great grandfather, also named Daniel Croome (1712-1833) were both Stone Masons in Hewelsfield. Their graves are at Hewlelsfield churchyard. I would be very interested if anyone has information about these folk.

Croome - Hewelsfield 19th Century Stone Masons

by selbyfamily @, Wednesday, June 10, 2009, 01:44 (5719 days ago) @ DennisCroome

Hi Dennis again!

I too am interested in the Croomes for a couple of reasons. Harriet Selby (1820) had a presumably illegitimate son, George (1840). On the 1841 Census he appears to be fostered with Elinor Crome (40) and Eliza (13) and Dannial(10) at
Extra Parochial, Brockweir Common. Elinor Croom is also given as a witness at the marriage of John Selby and Jane Darby. As you probably know, the Selbys were also Masons living at Hewelsfield. According to their baptisms, the father of Eliza and Dannial was Daniel Croom (without checking I think that is right). However, I have not been able to find a marriage between Elinor (Ellen)and Daniel - in fact, there is a Daniel married to someone else on the Parish Records.

The second reason is that Charles Maddox Brooks married Adele Florence Croome in 1887 and had two children one of whom was married to my husband's aunt. On the marriage certificate it states that Adele's father was George Croome, a mason. I was told by my husband's cousin that her grandmother was either French or Italian. In the last few days I have been checking this although I have not spoken my cousin yet to see if she knows any more. I have found an Adele Florence Velati born in London to an Italian father and I think she may well be Adele Florence Croome. There appears to be a Velati sister who died in Chepstow although the rest of the family appear in London.

I have not gone into this too deeply as I didn't want to go off at too much of a tangent - as the Brook(e)s are only indirectly related through my husband's aunt but I have got really interested in this story and whether maybe Adele was adopted by the Croomes for some reason.

Sorry I can't be more help with the Croomes but maybe you know something that will help me put this family togeher.

Sheila

You have opened a can of worms here Slowhands! I had missed the Velate/Patterson marriage. However, it is spelt slightly differently so could be a different family. Will have to make an urgent phone call tonight to see what I can find out. Will have to check to see where she was on the 1901 Census. Have you got the 1901 Census for Monmouth - it is not on Findmypast yet?

VELATI - CROOME/BURGESS

by selbyfamily @, Thursday, June 11, 2009, 00:13 (5718 days ago) @ slowhands

I am swimming in paper here trying to piece together these families - maybe I need a few worms to eat it all up!

It does seem strange that there does not appear to be a baptism for either Adele Florence or Ralph under Croome on the Parish Registers. Also I have checked freebmd and no birth is recorded for either anywhere. However, both marriages are recorded and there is about a 13 year gap between their ages.

I am sure we will eventually solve this puzzle - fingers crossed!

VELATI - CROOME/BURGESS

by selbyfamily @, Thursday, June 11, 2009, 02:55 (5718 days ago) @ slowhands

Do you think this means that Adele Croome is Adele Velati? I have found the Burgesses on the 1891 also in Caldicot (Adele F named as Burgess) but Charles was still there then so they must have moved from Somerset. There is a death for a Charles Burgess in 1894 Chepstow which ties in with Eliza being the Head in 1901. As I have said previously, Hilda Velati born March 1889 Croydon, sister of Adele, died Dec 1889 Chepstow so was possibly staying with the Burgesses in Caldicot whereas I was thinking she may have been with Susanna and George. I think Hilda must have been a twin with Mary Elizabeth also born March 1889 and died the same month. There was also another child Evelyn Mary born June 1891 who died in 1892.

I cannot find the Burgesses in 1881 in Somerset or Monmouthshire. Perhaps they moved around that time.

Perhaps when you have a minute you could look on the 1901 for Monmouthshire for George and Susanna Croome and see if there is anyone with them that would give us a clue. They are on the 1891 - just the two of them. Thanks for your help with this!

Sheila

Croome - Hewelsfield 19th Century Stone Masons

by selbyfamily @, Wednesday, June 10, 2009, 05:21 (5719 days ago) @ bertha

Hi Bertha

What we really need to find is a marriage between Ellen and Daniel or maybe there wasn't one. As I have said to Dennis, I found the two children but no marriage.

by selbyfamily @, Wednesday, June 10, 2009, 05:19 (5719 days ago) @ DennisCroome

I have just looked back at your message? Is there a mistake on the year of birth of your gggrandfather - 1712 - should it be 1792? There is a Daniel Croome born that year to Richard and Mary at Woolaston. If he died in 1833 he would be 121 years old! Your great grandfather appears to be the Daniel with Ellena and Liza on the 1841 Census but I have been unable to find a marriage between Daniel and Ellena. There are baptisms for about 7 children whose parents were Daniel and Emma Charlotte between 1864 and 1876 but according to your dates he cannot be one of your two Daniels. Perhaps you can clear up the mystery for me.

I think we need further clarification on some other points as well.
In your post you state that Daniel Croome died in 1863.
On your Family Tree on Ancestry you state that Daniel died in 1890.
You have information regarding who he married and the children they had.
Can you clarify the information that you are looking for, and confirm which are the correct dates.
Thanks

Daniel CROOME - Hewelsfield 1830- 1890 Stone Mason

by DennisCroome, Wednesday, June 10, 2009, 07:26 (5719 days ago) @ slowhands

Thank you for all the interest and queries.
The last reply by 'slowhands' more or less has all the dates that I have.
I can add:
Daniel Croome married a Caroline Croome (cousin?) on 19th December 1857 at Woolastone. It would appear that Caroline died a few months after child birth in March 1859 having given birth to a daughter, also called Caroline, in December 1858.
Daniel Croome's 2nd marriage was to: Emma Charlotte Smith (who was a widow) on 13th October 1863. Their children were Eliza 1868, Ellen 1866, Emma 1879, Jesse 1873, Albert 1876 (mu grandfather), William 1879, Hubert 1875.

Going back to Daniel Croome (senior) birth about 1772, death 30th April 1833. He appears to 'married' to Ellen / Elenor Cellens who died in 1869.

Does this help / clarify previous comments?
Thanks
Dennis Croome

Croome - Hewelsfield 19th Century Stone Masons

by DennisCroome, Wednesday, June 10, 2009, 10:23 (5719 days ago) @ DennisCroome

Hi Sheila
In answer to the Charles Brookes thoughts - this is what I have:
George Croome, born June 1868 at Hewelsfield, baptised at Hewelsfield on 14th June 1868. He married Susannah Burgess in December 1889. I do not know where the marriage took place.
George & Susannah had two children Adele and Ralph (a suggestion has been made that Ralph may have been adopted). Adele married Charles Brookes and Ralph married an Anne.
Adele & Charles had two children: Albert and Leonard.
Ralph & Anne had Peter, again, who who may have been adopted.
Your story about a French connection is fascinating. My father used to speak about this possibility because we have a Delahaye connection in our family. A good story, but no real evidence!

Hi Dennis

Thanks for that information. Albert Brookes was actually Bertram George, known as Bert, and was my husband's uncle by marriage to Ruth Selby. His daughter is the one who told me about Adele Velati. I believe that Antonio Velati possibly married a Mary Elizabeth Burgess in Chelsea in 1884. This links in very well with George Smith Croome and Susannah Burgess who married in Chepstow in Dec 1889 and probably explains why the death of one of Adele's sisters is registered in Chepstow. It could well be that Adele was adopted by George and Susannah, Susannah being Adele's aunt. I will try and speak to Bert's daughter soon anad see what more she knows. All I remember her telling me some years ago was that his mother's surname was Velati and at that time I could find nothing but as I said previously, I have now found what I think is her birth in London.

Will let you know if I find anything more which will solve this puzzle.

Dennis

Have just done a bit more looking and found that Mary Elizabeth and Susanna Burgess were, in fact, sisters. Mary (seems to be known as Elizabeth)states on the census after her marriage that she was born in Radstock, Somerset and her birth is registered Clutton 1855 and Susanna registered Clutton 1864. I have checked the Censuses and they were daughters of Charles and Eliza Burgess living at Pensford which would come under the Clutton area and is just down the road from where we live in Bristol. Now we just need to find out why/how Adele ended up with George and Susanna.
