Calverton Colliery Notts

The emotional moment created a mixture of anger and sadness among former miners.
Vernon Sterry of Arnold worked at Calverton for more than seven years before being made
redundant in1993

He also spent 13 years at Newstead colliery.(Newstead finally closed on the 19th march 1987.)

He said: “It IS very sad watching this site being demolished
“It was such a modern site with so much potential Coal is such a natural resource that I just
can’t believe there were no buyers for this colliery or that nobody could step in and save it.
“It is a very emotional time for me because I have so many happy memories working there.
“The coal industry is being strangled all the time, but at least I can keep the memories”
