Littledean gap in baptism records? - researching BURGUM (General)

by donburg @, Naples, FL USA, Tuesday, June 16, 2009, 10:59 (5713 days ago)

I have been analyzing the Littledean baptism records in my research of BURGUM / BURGHAM. I have come into a major gap of baptisms between the years of 1688 to 1743. However, there continue to be marraiges and deaths during this period. Does anyone have advice or run across this problem in their research?

Thank you,
Don Burgham

Thanks for your reply. I am able to make more sense of the records if I combine the parishes. Based on your experience, would you say that the forest people would change parishes even if they lived in the same place for generations? Is it likely that my BURGUMs lived in Littledean but used Abenhall or Flaxley for their baptisms and marraiges?

The answer is it depends on the time !

In the timeframe you are researching the Forest was "extra parocial" i.e. no Parish church, so if the family lived in the EP area then they might travel/walk to whichever Church / minister they "trusted" :-)

Littledean / Flaxley / Abenhall are all convenient for the East Dean Extra Parocial area
