Descendents of Albert Smith / Rhoda Goode (General)

by Lawrencef ⌂ @, Trentham, Australia, Thursday, July 02, 2009, 14:28 (5697 days ago)

Hi

I'm wondering if a cursory glance through the phone book in Little Dean, Gloster Mitcheldean, Tibberton, Gloucester etc shows any descendents with the following surnames...

Smith (sigh too commmon), Goode, Hughes, Tresham, Pearce, Holder.

I know that some of those names are very common but the more I research the more I think that there has to be living decendents still in the forest of dean area. I'm interested in writing to them if possible.

Slowhands, I've made some real progress on Caldwell, and have isolated Thomas and Elizabeth Goode's (nee pearce) daughter (Rachael) as the mother of Rhoda Minnie Goode. I doubt that I'll ever find a father as it seems that all the illigitimate children (Lovell raised by James Smith / Elizabeth Hughes, Rhoda M Goode raised by Thomas Goode / Elizabeth Pearce for example) all seem to be given over to their Grandparents for raising. The actual mother then pretends to have never had a child and manages to get married later on.

Can anyone tell me if this was a common practice of the time (it seems to be common in my family at least).

I located Lovells wife and family in the UK and am going to try and contact descendents next, oddly his wife Stella Burton died in 1963 (she never remarried) in the suburb in sydney (Balmain) I was bought up in (this is odd as I'm a new zealander and came here at the age of 12). It was a rough old suburb then and still was when I arrived, full of miners cottages, children. When I came there it was a real mix of new money and working class miners and there children, school was similer to being in hell with all the issues that caused.

Regards

Lawrence

ps the South Africa geneologist hit a brick wall so am still unable to find out anything about Olive Elizabeth Smith and her voyages far and wide (I have found her trip to canada and her death in NZ though).

Hi Slowhands,

I think we've been in touch before, but I can't remember your real name, lol. What more do you know about Elizabeth GOOD the mother of George? I have her as the mother of another baseborn child Charlotte GOOD baptised 24 Mar 1794 Abenhall.

Did she ever marry? Or did she just keep on having baseborn children?

Regards,

George GOODE 1791 Mitcheldean

Hi A

Are you referring to Elizabeth Mary Cook, married William George R Goode in 1794. They had George and also Thomas Goode. The Charlotte Goode I have in my records is from 1836 and she is the daughter of Thomas Goode b. 1806 and Lydia b.1801

If you post the details for your Charlotte Goode and sources I'll add her into my tree. Likewise if you would like more I'll happily send oyu a gedcom file with the information I have.

One caveate - because the Goodes largely immigrated to the US and became mormons I'm finding that a lot of the information on them is quite suspect. My experience is that LDS information can be highly inaccurate and so I'd ask that you verify the information I send independently.

Hi Lawrencef,

Having traced the GOOD/E family back to the best of my ability, I seem to have a succession of baseborn children. I wanted to confirm that I wasn't missing any marriages.

1. Elizabeth GOOD baptised 24 Jan 1779 Blaisdon, Gloucester. Mother Sarah GOOD
2a. George GOOD baptised 28 Aug 1791 Abenhall, Gloucester. Mother Elizabeth GOOD
2b. Charlotte GOOD baptised 14 Mar 1794 Mitcheldean, Gloucester. Mother Elizabeth GOOD

I was asking if Elizabeth GOOD had every married, or whether she kept having baseborn children. Is this Elizabeth GOOD (maiden name) in your family tree?

Nancy

Albert SMITH 1868 Mitcheldean ( -1891 Runcorn death ?)

by Lawrencef ⌂ @, Trentham, Australia, Wednesday, June 23, 2010, 15:09 (5341 days ago) @ slowhands

Time to lay poor Albert Smith to rest.

Albert travelled to Runcorn to work on the Canals. His wife Rhoda Smith (nee Goode) was at his side when he died on the 15 Dec 1891 of typhoid fever at 6 Grindrod Sq Runcorn. His death was attended by Bartholomew Marigan MD. If anyone has a photo of that address from that period I'd love to see it as it is now some sort of bypass.

His wife Minnie may have reverted to her maiden name or not. I cannot really locate her after 1891 in any records.

I suspect that this might be her but have not been able to confirm.

Their daughter Olive Elizabeth Smith appears to have been bought up by her Great Gandmother Elizabeth Goode.

Minnie Goodes mother Rachel Goode married Anthony Cooper (1847-1889) and she moved to Cardiff shortly before he died (or perhaps at around the same time of his death). I've even located a photo on the house they lived in at Cardiff. They had quite a few children (and the McClure line is I think in or around London but I've not been able to track them past the 70's).

Feel free to contact me directly for a gedcom file containing verified information.

Albert SMITH 1868 Mitcheldean ( -1891 Runcorn death ?)

by Lawrencef ⌂ @, Trentham, Australia, Thursday, August 29, 2019, 03:34 (1987 days ago) @ Lawrencef

After Slowhands passed away; I slowed my research considerably but in the interests of leaving a trace for anyone who stumbles on this thread, I found out what happened to Alberts wife Minnie (nee Goode).

She died 11 days after Albert of Typhoid in the same hospital.

26 Dec 1891, Runcorn, Cheshire, UK, Hospital House.

Deaths Dec 1891
SMITH Rhoda 22 Runcorn 8a 155

(Certificate in my possession).

Minnie's mother Rachel Goode went off to Cardiff and I'm delighted to discover that they have left numerous descendants. In fact she had 9 children with Anthony Cooper b. June 1847 d. 1889 Mitcheldean.

Anyone who is a descendant of the Goode, Smith, Millard families I'd love to hear from you.

Regards

Lawrence Finn (3rd Great Grandson of Rachel Goode and I live in Australia do that's even more amusing)
