i'm researching a Rachel Natelia Curtis who married a John Casey in NSW Australia I was wondering if this is the same person. I do not know her parents name and I'm not sure where she was born. As Latelia & Natelia are very simular could this be the same person

Hi - Do you know when Rachel tavelled to Australia? There is no Rachel Curtis born 1874 in the 1881 census, was she in OZ. And no Rachel N Curtis registered in 1874, so I think this Rachel is as close as you are going to get, especially if you know she left Britain before 1881. Two Rachels one in Norfolk and one near London I think are non starters. I think it's worth getting the birth certificate.

Not many Curtis families in the 1871 census that would be registered Westbury on Severn (East Dean)Edwin and Emma who are still there in 1881 no Rachel.

In Lydney there's a young couple Thomas and Martha with a son Lewis age 7 months, but they are still there in 1881 no Rachel

A widower Jacob age 55 is there with two daughters in Westbury, Julia 13 (16 when Rachel was born) and Sarah age 12

I'll gamble on Julia, she's not there in 1881 and I would think any marriage would be registered Westbury, Jacob dies there in 1879 age 64. Of course Rachel being a Curtis would be illigitimate, is that the reason for emmigrating. Good luck Fred All guess work

I am also researching the Curtis family from Twigworth, Gloster, England. I have a Charles Curtis who married Cathering Roberts in England. They had two children that I know of. Firstly Rachel Curtis was born around 1874 in England. She came out in N.Z. whith her parents and later went to Australis and married a John Casey and I understand that they had 9 children although I don't know their names. Secondly they had a son Charles John Curtis who was born in Nelson N.Z. in 1876. I do have some information on this family which I am happy to share. Catherine Roberts died on 14 March 1880 and Charles Curtis later married again to Hannah Davis in 1882 and she was from Lydbrook, England and they had no Chrildren.

Ruth Curtis N.Z.

I'm not sure if you're still interested in information regarding Rachel Natelia, I've recently been researching her as she's my great great grandmother. After marrying John Casey in Newcastle in 1891 they had 12 children although one died in infancy. They are:

Mary 1891-1972
Charles 1893-1953
Peter 1894-1974
Violet May 1897-1986
John Albert 1899-1972
Andrew 1902-1971
William 1904-1905
Edith Natelia 1906-1992
Jessie 1909-
William James 1911-1979
Edward Carson 1913-1932
Allen 1916-1995

Somewhere along the way their surname became CASSEY.

They also moved from NSW to Victoria and finally settled in Mt Magnet, Western Australia during the gold rush. After her husband John died of Tuberculosis in 1921 she remarried Robert J Mead in 1923 at Jarrahdale, Western Australia. As far as I know they had no children.

Rachel died on 15th August 1936 in Perth. She is buried at Karrakatta cemetery under the name Rachel Natelia Mead, next to her son Edward (Ted) who was accidently shot in 1932 at the age of 19.
