Many thanks for your very helpful response which has enabled me to go one step further back in time with FOD Parish Records, together with the usual "as many questions as answers"

Have just looked at the original entry in the register and confirm that Israel James was baptised 26 Dec 1689 as given in the IGI. The entry is in the database but the child`s name is shown as illegible.

I was pleased to come across this thread in my recent exploration of the James family, but it has raised a bit of a problem. The baptism record for Israel gives his parents as Richard James and Avis, and low and behold there is a marriage record in 1677 of Richard and Avis Smith (plus baptisms of several other children before Israel). However, the only baptism for an Avis Smith is in 1639 in Ruardean.
Is it really possible for a woman to have had a child at the age of 50?
Of course this long ago there must be missing records, but otherwise it seems to fit. Any suggestions welcome.

Perhaps a closer fit to Lydney and Yorkley. However it feels like a generation is missing - 1639 -> 1677...

Avis SMITH 1639 -1706 Awre & Yorkley

Since it doesn't list the parents or the conditions of the bride and groom, is it possible that Avis was not born Smith, but that it is her married name, and that she was widowed? Don't mean to muddy the waters here, but might that be a possibility?

That is odd - there is another burial record for Avis, same register reference but different date.
