Can we search for witnesses? (General)

Is it possible to search the records for the names of witnesses to a marriage?
I have found through past experience that witnesses names can be very useful in trying to prove a link, when all else has failed.
Today, I came across one quite by accident that mayhelp me in establishing a link that has eluded me for over twenty years.

Yes, you can search the records for the names of witnesses to a marriage.
