IF there was a Will and you are lucky you might try :-
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/wills.asp
You can search and download Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC) wills made between 1384 and 12 January 1858. Until 12 January 1858 all wills had to be proved by the church and other courts. The PCC was the most important of these courts dealing with relatively wealthy individuals living mainly in the south of England and most of Wales.
These PCC wills are all registered copy wills, meaning they are copies of original probates written into volumes, by clerks at the church courts. Over the years, styles of handwriting changed, and you will find that many of the earlier wills are written in Latin.

Hi Chris. That is great!! Thank you. My name is actually Bill White. My gr grandmother's name was Fanny HALE and she married Francis WHITE. Sidney HALE is my gr grandmother's brother. He was a veteran of WWI serving with the 85th Battalion, Nova Scotia Highlanders of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was killed Sept 2, 1918.
I don't have access to Ancestry.com. How did you find the names of the children for Edward & Hannah? I descend from their son John 1756-1803.

Hi Bill, or should I say "Gidday Mate!"
Glad I could help. My wife unfortunately passed away 2 years ago, but knowing my interest in genealogy she said "Not in my lifetime!" She had a phobia about the past. Anyway I started on my tree 2 years ago taking a subscription with Ancestry.co.uk (a subsidiary of Ancestry.com specialising in the U.K.). Working on it part-time I now have a tree with over 1,000 entries and climbing rapidly. The new search facility on Ancestry is very powerful, allowing you to scan censuses, BMD's, Parish Records, Wills, Probates, other Members trees etc, etc. Combining Ancestry with the IGI (International Genealogical Index) on Family Search website has basically given excellent results with links to other Hale relatives worldwide, together with links to other branches of our family. Am currently conversing with people in USA, Canada, Australia, England and Wales. Have also joined our local Coffs Harbour District Family History Society which gives me access to all sites outside the U.K., e.g. USA, Canada, Germany, Australia, N.Z., etc. Was asked to do a Workshop in July on "Wales and the Forest of Dean", which basically detailed our Hale Family migration from Littledean to Newport, Monmouthshire, to Cardiff and Barry in S. Wales and subsequently my emigration to Australia. If I can be of any further help let me know. Chris.

Hi Chris. I am sorry to hear about your wife's passing.
I sure looks like you have done a lot of work in 2 years. I have been working on my family tree for 13 years. I have also been in contact with HALE relatives in the USA, England & all over Canada.
My main interest is in the WWI, WWII & Korean War Veterans in my family tree. Would you happen to know of any HALE veterans?
How do you descend from Edward & Hannah HALE?
Have you ever heard of a connection to Sir Matthew HALE? This is a family story I have that we are descendants of his. I have yet to make any connection.

Hi Bill,
I think you can discount any connection to Sir Matthew Hale. All our forebears were yeomen, Ag labs, and coal miners from Littledean or Little Dean or Dean Parva if you go back to the 16th century. The earliest entry I have is for Edward Hale, yeoman of Dean Parva, burial 1604. Will not proven till 1672, Calendar of Gloucestershire Mills. Consistory Court, Bishop of Gloucester.
I have yet to make a connection to my next entry which is for Edward Hale, b. abt 1660, Little Dean, m. another Hannah Beard at Hardwicke, Glos. on 20/11/1682. Have researched Hardwicke and many Beards resided there at that time.
Edward and Hannah had Thomas Hale, b. abt. 1682-3 at Coleford, d. 1758 @ Little Dean aged 75-80. He married a Mary, b. ? d. 6/1710 Little Dean. Their offspring were 1) Sarah b. 1701, 2) Thomas b. 1703, 3) our Edward, b. 15/12/1706, d. 1765 Little Dean, m. 1728 Hannah Beard b. Little Dean, d. 3/02/1758 Little Dean, and 4) John, b. 1710.
My line of descent is as follows: Aaron Hale (1741-1812) was 6th child of Edward & Hannah. With his first wife Ann Trigge he had 6 children, Amos, Thomas, John, Edward, Aaron, and Noah. We descend through John (1761-1826) who married Hannah Lodge (1765-1848). They had 4 children: 1) Joseph (1791-1859), m. Lucy Hampton, and 2) twin Matthew (1791-1833), 3) John, b. 1794 and 4) William, my ggg/gfather (1798-1867). William married Sarah Naylor the daughter of the Governor of Littledean Prison, William Naylor, (1766-1851) who served with the Royal Horse Guards Regiment (the Blues) from 1784-1808 and I believe saw service in the Peninsular War. Appointed Turnkey of Bridewell, Little Dean Prison in 1815, and Governor in 1816. He served as Governor for 28 years, retiring 9 Jun 1843. He was also a Chelsea Pensioner and Annuitant and obviously a man of some standing in the Little Dean community.
William & Sarah Hale had 11 children. Their 7th was Thomas Hale Snr, my gg/gfather b. Littledean Jun 1838. He joined GWR in 1856 and retired in 1909, a career of 53 years with the railways. His son Thomas Jnr started with GWR (apprenticed to his dad as a fitter) at the age of 10 in 1873, and ending up as Chief Inspector Rolling Stock for Barry Railway, a career of 57 years with GWR! - a total of 110 years GWR service between them. That has to be some kind of a record! My gfather Thomas James Hale was an only child. He served with distinction on the Staff of General Hague in WW1 (Meritorious Service Medal), and my father Hugh Thomas Hale was a Territorial Army Volunteer pre-war and served in France, W Africa and Burma (Territorial Decoration) in WW2 ending up with the rank of Lieut Col. He became a well-respected Consulting Engineer with over 30 years service in the Middle East. Hope this is what you are after. Chris.

Hi Chris. Sorry for my delay in replying. Your grandfather was awarded the MSM. WOW! What regiment did your father serve with during the war? Was he an officer in WWII?
To be honest Chris I read that you descended from Aaron 1741-1812 and left it at that until I was able to give it more time. Well, tonight I sat down and read your e-mail word for word I wished I read it fully when I got it.
WOW!!!! You say the Aaron HALE 1741-1812 is the father of John HALE 1761-1826. You see John HALE & Hannah LODGE are my 4th gr grandparents. Their son Joseph 1791-1859 and his wife Lucy HAMPTON are my 3rd gr grandparents.
I thought that the parents of John HALE 1761-1826 was Edward HALE 1706. I guess I was wrong. How did you find that Aaron was the father of John?
I am thrilled that you are a descendant of William HALE & Sarah NAYLOR. Did you know their son George settled in Nova Scotia? Their son Samuel also settled in Nova Scotia but was killed in 1873 in a mine disaster.
Another family story I am trying to figure out is Matthew HALE's service in the US Civil War. Are you familiar with that story?
I am going to leave it at that. I can go on and on now that I know we are related closer that I thought.

Hi Chris. There was something else I needed to add.
I have John HALE bapt. May 3, 1756 being the spouse of Hannah LODGE. This John is the son of Edward & Hannah HALE. I think the only way to find out which John HALE married Hannah LODGE is to find out which John HALE is buried with her. I wonder if they gave a grave marker with dates on it in the Littledean cemetery. What do you think? I can post a query to the forum to see if somebody could visit the cemetery.

Hello Christopher,Ihave been reading your postings of the Hale family tree and believe we may have kin in common. My wife and I find that our families paths crossed many years ago and we have mutual ancestors.
My main interest at the moment is the family of William Hale 1798-1867 and Sarah[Naylor].You indicate that they had 11 children,in my findings I have found 8 and dates coincide.Have you got a full list of their children with dates please? In my tree I have a William 1836-1903 who could be the elder brother of your Thomas 1838.My Hales are on my wife's side of the family but William 1836 married Sarah Teague 1839-1892 a twin and a direct descendant of the Industrial Teagues of the Forest of Dean and an ancestor of mine.
Your help would be appreciated.

Hi Maurice. You replied to my posting so I'll reply even if you wanted Christopher and not me. Anyway, I have William HALE & Sarah NAYLOR in my family tree too. I don't have 11 children for them but do have 10. The last two George & Samuel went to Canada. They lived in Nova Scotia, Canada. Samuel was killed in a coal mine in 1873 and George married and had 10 children of his own.
I have 8 children for William HALE & Sarah TEAGUE. I met another HALE researcher who descends from Emily HALE & John RYDER. Emily was William & Sarah's daughter as you might know.

Hi Bill, sorry I sent my query to the wrong person but it has confirmed that my efforts have been going in the right direction.
My records so far have listed 8 children for William Hale and Sarah [Naylor] ie MARY ANN 1827,SARAH 1832,MATTHEW 1834,WILLIAM 1836-1903,THOMAS 1838,JAMES 1840,GEORGE 1843,and SAMUEL 1845.
I agree that WILLIAM 1836-1903 married SARAH TEAGUE in 1863,they had 8 children EMILY 1865,JANE1867,WILLIAM EDWARD 1870,SAMUEL 1872,ANNIE 1875,HARRIET 1878,MARTIN 1880,LOUISA 1882.
WILLIAM EDWARD married EDITH ELIZABETH HART in 1906 a sister to my wife's grandmother ALICE FLORENCE HART.
You say you have recorded 10 children for William and SARAH as opposed to the 8 I have and CHRIS claimed 11.I hope you can confirm the ones I have and provide the others.
Thanks for your help

I was wondering if you have any printed matter I could read to do with your work on Wales and the FOREST of DEAN as both my families(ALLAWAY and POWELL) moved from the forest to Monmouthshire in the early 1900`s

Hi Bill,
I just found this site and this message board. My gr Grandfather was William Hale who was Fanny Hale's younger brother. Fanny was born in Forest of Dean. Her Parents immigrated to Westville, Pictou County, Nova Scotia Canada in 1880.
I have a family tree that lists Fanny and all of her siblings (with birth/death dates) & who they married along with all of their children's names.
I have been finding a lot of information at the Nova Scotia Historical Vital Statistics site: https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/
At the site you can view records online (and order copies) of actual birth, marriage & death records so that you can verify information first hand.
There is also a section of the NS Archives & records site that covers the coal mines & mining accidents: http://www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm/virtual/meninmines/disasters.asp?Language=English
You can see Samuel Hale (son of William Hale & Sarah Naylor) listed as one of the miners killed in the Drummond Mine disaster of 1873.
Re: your request "Another family story I am trying to figure out is Matthew HALE's service in the US Civil War. Are you familiar with that story?" I have a letter from a distant cousin that says his grandfather wrote a letter saying that "Uncle Matthew" was at the seige of Vicksburg. This distant cousin also alludes to "Uncle Matthew" being a confederate soldier. I hope this is helpful -- I am also going to look into it more.
Also, I have a letter that tells about Sidney's (which I've also seen spelled "Sydney") "regiment" numbers: "Sydney's regiment nos. when he left Canada was 193, in England 185, and in France 85. Service medal and military medal were the two medals."
I have added many of these relatives to my family tree on ancestry.com. If you are not on that website, I am happy to share the info with you in other ways if it is of interest.
Do you have more info on John Hale's (1756-12/9/1803) marriage/children?

Could this Hannah Beard who married Edward Hale of Littledean have been born Hannah Herbert, who first married a Mr Beard and was therefore a widow when she married Edward Hale? The reason I ask is because in my family tree there is a Hannah Herbert who married an Edward Hale of Littledean and had a son, also named Edward. Edward junior is mentioned in the will of his uncle, Charles Herbert of Ruardean (d. 1767). However, I have not yet found a marriage for Hannah Herbert, to either a Hale or a Beard.

Hi James. That sure sounds like it could be possible. I have not found a marriage between Edward HALE & Hannah BEARD either. I am just going by the baptism of the children. It says that parents were Edward & Hannah HALE. Thanks for your reply.
Did you happen to hear from my YEMM relative here in Ontario?

Hi Bill & Shirleyanne,
Sorry for the long delay in replying - had a few challenges - flu', fall and tooth extraction! so work on Family Tree came to a grinding halt! (to coin a phrase)
Now to get back to where we were. First let me say we can all go up blind alleys in this business! and I will be the first to admit I could well be wrong in attaching my downline to the John Hale (1761, son of Aaron 1741 and Ann Trigge), rather than the John Hale (1756, son of Edward & Hannah Beard).
My tree up to John Hale/Hannah Lodge is all corroberated by data from relevant BMD's, Censuses, the IGI, One World Tree etc. However from John upwards the evidence is meagre and confusing and a certain amount of conjecture was necessary. And now with Shirleyanne's additional entries I am totally confused!!
Bill, I think you may well be right with your baptismal evidence for John (which I hadn't come across). If our John was in fact b. 1756 and not 1761, and if indeed he was the son of Edward 1706 and not Aaron, I stand corrected.
Second, I visited St Ethelbert's Church, Littledean in September last year and copied the graves register and photographed all relevant Hale gravestones still legible: unfortunately not a great help in our quest. So many of the headstones had deteriorated from age and weathering due to the 'soft' local stone used. I can send a copy of what I have if address provided by email.
Finally Bill, I came across a Yemm burial at St. Ethelbert's if anyone interested.
Chris.

Sorry to add to the confusion but is it possible that the John Hale married to Hannah Lodge could have been baptised 13th Sep 1761, father Thomas Hale baptised in Littledean?
Sarah HALE 1770 Littledean
by Shirleyanne , Solihull, Tuesday, September 15, 2009, 19:37 (5627 days ago) @ ChristopherHale13
Have you come across Sarah HALE bap. 8 Jul 1770 in Littledean, daughter of Edward HALE and Hannah?
I thought that she was the daughter of Edward HALE 1723 and Hannah BEARD, but that would give us THREE Hannah BEARDS - at least one too many.
There are 17 children baptised between 1728 and 1776 in Littledean whose parents are Edward HALE and Hannah.
Apart from the 10 you have already mentioned, there is also Mary 1753, Thomas 1760, Joseph 1765, Elizabeth 1767, Sarah 1770, William 1773 and Jane 1776.
I haven't been able to trace a marriage for Edward HALE 1730, but I wondered if he could be the father of Sarah (and some of the others).
