Thomas Dewfield Mountjoy b1852 Little Dean (General)
by RosieGrey, Monday, July 27, 2009, 00:35 (5678 days ago)
I am doing some research for a friend whose gt.grandfather was Thomas Dewfield MOUNTJOY, and I am puzzled by the surname Dewfield. I have Thomas's birth certificate, and he is registered as Thomas DEWFIELD son of James DEWFIELD and Ann formerly HAINS.
I have found a marriage in 1832 for James DEWFIELD and Ann HEINS, which ties in with the above, and yet in 1841 James was James MOUNTJOY, in 1851 James DEWFIELD, in 1861 James DEWFIELD MOUNTJOY, then James MOUNTJOY in 1871 and 1881. I am puzzled as to where the name DEWFIELD came from?
I see that in the previous generation Thomas's grandparents, ie James MOUNTJOY and Maria BLAKE, the surname LANDER was used by some of their children, and wondered whether it was a Forest of Dean custom to introduce other names. (I note Slowhands post regarding James LANDER who was a surgeon)
I am hoping someone on this excellent website can help me, and would also be pleased to hear from anyone else who is researching this family.

Thank you so much for this information. I had not found the base born baptism of 19th May 1811 for James Dulfield - there are so many variations in spelling for the surname DEWFIELD. Thank you also for the info re James' mother Mary Dutfield. The friend I am researching for knew that the name Dewfield had appeared in her MOUNTJOY family but did not know why or when.
Strictly speaking she should perhaps have been born a Dewfield! In fact the family of James DEWFIELD b1811 called themselves Dewfield, then added Mountjoy, then eventually dropped Dewfield and just used Mountjoy. It does make me think that his unknown father may have been a Mountjoy.
Re the other James, born to James MOUNTJOY and Maria BLAKE and baptised on 18th August 1811, could this be his marriage?

Beryl,
I was interested to come across your post as I have in the past researched this Dewfield MOUNTJOY family. The name Dewfield also often seems to be given as Dunfield - it was some time ago I researched this but think it was census info that indicated as such.
Thomas Dewfield Mountjoy is my Gt. Gt. Gt. Gt. Uncle. Thomas' sister, Annie Dunfield (Dewfield) MOUNTJOY is I believe my Gt. Gt. Gt. Grandmother. She married John PARSONS in 1873 and my Gt Gt Grandmother, Matilda Ann PARSONS was born 13 March 1876. Matilda married Thomas GRIFFIN in 1895 and my Gt Grandmother (one of seven children) was born in 1903. She was christened Alexandra Eliza MOUNTJOY GRIFFIN ... and why the Mountjoy name was included in her name has been a source of much speculation in our family for years. She was the fifth child and the only one with Mountjoy as a given name.
I would love to know if your friend and I have some ancestors in common and whether perhaps they might know more about the MOUNTJOYS.
Would be delighted to hear from you.

Thanks for your reply. Thomas Dewfield Mountjoy b1852 was my friends Gt.grandfather and you both do indeed have ancestors in common as your 3xgt.grandmother Annie Dewfield Mountjoy and Thomas were twins. Thomas's birth certificate states his time of birth was 8am, and I would be interested to know Annie's time of birth if you have it, just out of curiosity to know who was the eldest.
Thomas Dewfield Mountjoy married Mary Ann Lewis in 1876, they had three children, Tom b1877, Evelyn Alice b1878 and William b1881. Thomas was killed in an accident at Foxes Bridge Colliery in 1893, he was only 41. His wife Mary Ann had died in 1888, and Thomas married Sophia Harper in 1890. After his death the family do not seem to have stayed together, I have traced Tom and William to Yorkshire but I have been unable to find Evelyn Alice after 1891.
The friend I have been researching for would be delighted to hear from you. I will pm you direct with her address as she does not have a computer.

Hi,
I was interested to read your post as I think your great grandmother was my great aunt. My great grandmother was Matilda Ann Parsons who married Thomas Griffin, my grandmother was their daughter Matilda Annie May Parsons who was born in 1876, as far as I can see from my research the Griffin family moved to Llanbradach, Wales in about 1905 where your gt grandmother was brought up. If I am correct she married Edgar Watkins and their daughter Lucy Watkins was born in Llanbradach in 1923. My grandmother seems to have estranged herself from the family and moved to Cardiff where she married my grandfather, John Smith. I have been intrigued as to her brothers and sisters as nobody knew anything about them. Would be delighted to hear from you.

Hi Patsie - Are you still active on this account? It has been some years since I last used the account and had to re-register, but I do think we have ancestors in common and I have quite a lot of information in that family line.
