JONES, Enos (b. 1856) (General)
by KerriSimps, Wednesday, July 29, 2009, 16:20 (5675 days ago)
I've been compiling my family tree for over 4 years, and this is my only stumbling block.
My great-great grandfather, Enos Jones, is listed on the census returns as being born in Rudd Hill/Rudding Hill, Glos. Further research indicates that he spoke very little English and spoke mainly Welsh. People have directed me to the village of Ruardean Hill in Glos., which seems plausible.
He was a miner and the first record I can find of him is in 1881 (Durham Prison - haven't been able to find out why), and his later marriage listed him as Ernest (though this may be due to misinterpretation at the time). His eldest son is called Thomas Henry (I know this is sometimes carried down from the father or mother's father). That's everything I know.
I am awaiting receipt of his marriage certificate to give his father's name. I cannot find a birth certificate at all, and another forum has suggested their may be some confusion with the name Enos and Enoch.
Is anyone else reseaching the Jones family in the area at about this time? I appreciate any advice offered!
Thanks,
Kerri

I agree.
The census entries between 1881 and 1901 are certainly the correct person. John William, his son, was my great grandfather. Enos was still in Crawcrook, Durham, in 1911.
I think that he very strong accent may have caused a problem for officials in Durham, so am not even certain his name would have been listed correctly. I can find no trace prior to 1881 and a birth certificate search has proved fruitless so far.
I am still waiting for the postman to arrive with Enos (or Ernest, as written on the marriage record) and Esther's marriage certificate. I'm hoping this can shed a little light on matters..
Thanks,
Kerri

You are FABULOUS!
I think you could be right - I haven't looked through all your info yet, but I was just about to come on here with the details of Enos's marriage certificate. His father was ERNEST (Enos, most probably) HOPKINS JONES! He was deceased when his son married in 1882, but had also been a miner.
Neither Enos, his new father-in-law or his other witness were able to sign their names on the marriage certificate.
Thanks SO much. This side of the family is a mystery to me, but I'd heard they were lovely people, so I didn't want to give up!

Does raise the question about why they dropped the father's surname and became the Jones family...

He discovered that he was baptised after their marriage , or held greater affection for his Mother and perhaps felt that he was a JONES after his Mother ( or older siblings on 1851 census).
You will probably never know.

Yes, that last Enos was my Grandad's brother. I didn't know him well - he had Alzheimer's Disease in his later life, but I do remember him giving me a lovely gift of a Worzel Gummidge writing set when I was little. He was very kind.
My grandad was also a miner, keeping up the family tradition until I think ill-health forced his retirement. I have a photo of him with a pit pony. I belive his father, John William, was a miner too.
