Hoare Family - Doward/Whitchurch (General)

by derekyoung, Thursday, August 06, 2009, 12:00 (5662 days ago)

Searching for a Bert Hoare brother of Emma Hoare (who later married George William Young of Walford). He may have been listed as Albert or Bertrum Hoare. Cannot find any trace of him in National Archives, census etc. I know that he existed because I stayed with him when I was a young lad. He was signalman at Chalford Station in Glos. He was always known as Uncle Bert. He lived in Chalford and, I assume that he died in Chalford. Emma Hoare was born in Whitchurch in 1877 and her father I have listed as George Hoare born 1853 and Married to Elizabeth ?

If anyone can help then I would be pleased to hear from them.

Hi Derek - I think he's in Stow on the Wold in 1911 shortly before a possible marriage in Stroud (FreeBMD) later that year to Jessie Arnold or Emma Marchant, does that ring any bells.

Something happens in 1901 he should show age 19, and the only child shown with parents George 48 and Elizabeth 47 is Dorothy age 9

George and Elizabeth Webb married in 1875, and they seem to have lived in the middle of Whitchurch next to the Crown Inn. I haven't looked at the parish records here, but by the census-
Chidren
George 1874?
Emma 1877
William A 1880
Albert 1882
Ellen 1886
Mabel 1889
Dorothy 1892
George is said to be born Peterstow Hfds, Elizabeth born Stow on the Wold which may explain the move to the Cotswolds.

Hi Fredb,
Many thanks for your reply. I think that you may have highlighted the correct Albert Hoare but I do not remember him being married. He may well of been but his wife would have died or left him prior to 1947. I remember that he did have a housekeeper - maybe that was his wife! There was a connection with a Lewis family around the Stroud area but I cannot remember too much about them - just the odd visit to them with my parents. My son has traced an Albert Hoar (without the e)to Bourton on the Water where he is listed as signalman. It is possible that I need to visit Chalford and dig around some of the church records.
Again many thanks for your help.

Regards, Derek

Hi Pete,

It could be. There seems to be a few Hoares around that area. I remember an Elizabeth. She visited my grandmother (Emma) a few times. Quite a scary women in her black Victorian long dress. I remember that she had sharp pointed features and didn't seem to like small children!

Thanks for your reply.

Derek
