George Davis, Newent 1797 to 1881 (General)
Will there be any additional information on the actual parish registers for the baptism (1797) and marriage (1820) for George Davis, as opposed to that transcribed in the records on this site?
I still have the dilemma of two George Davis's baptised in Newent only 9 months apart, and can't fathom out which is the right one. One is dated July 30th 1797, and the other May 13th 1798, and obviously to settle matters and try and go further back i need to be sure of his parents.
Slowhands had suggested checking the death certificate to see if that helped but to no avail. I'm leaning to the 1797 George but only i think because i have lots of information on his brothers & sisters.
The 1841 census has him as George Danis in Upleadon, but by then he has set up home with his family, and left his parents behind.
Any help appreciated.

if we can find his father as a shoe maker even better !>

He seems to have been in Yorkshire for some time mid 1820's?
Consider parents being in Newent /Linton possible burial for Mother -

George DAVIS, Newent 1798 to 1871
Thanks both for the info.
I'm sure of everything going back from 1901 that the family stayed in the Newent area as agricultural labourers until my line went to Ross and then Bristol (Slowhand's first hunch)
George DAVIS and his wife Ann (nee Sparrow) where married on 14th Feb 1820 in Dymock and i have their children as Jeremiah, Josia, Andrew, Sarah Ann, Benjamin, Elizabeth and Paul (my direct descendent).
The name link as suggested therefore is that George's second born daughter (Elizabeth), was also the name of his mother (if his parents were John & Elizabeth DAVIS and he was baptised on 30th July 1797), and was also the name of his eldest sister (baptised 22nd Sept 1793).
If you can follow that and i can find no concrete proof otherwise, it looks like I'll take John DAVIS and his wife Elizabeth (nee STERRY) as George's parents and believe that my George DAVIS was the one baptised in 1797 and not 1798.
Any other comments and suggestions would be welcome, and thanks so far.
George DAVIS, Newent 1798 to 1871
Try looking at the FOD records for marriages/then census of the siblings.
Had a quick look at Elizabeth born 1793 in Newent (daughter of John/Elizabeth - and found a marriage 13 September 1816 in Newent to William COLEMAN - one of the witnesses was Chas DAVIS (assume Charles her brother c1795).
Charles DAVIS (again Son of John/Elizabeth) married Elizabeth VINER in Newent 28 July 1818 and (using the Advanced Search) found two Sons christened in Newent, Daniel 1819, and Charles 1821
Now.... this Charles DAVIS and Elizabeth are on the 1851 census are in Upleadon (where I think your George was....
Edons Hill
Charles DAVIS age 58 (age crossed through) born Newent
Elizabeth age 54 (age crossed through) born Weston, Here.
Charles DAVIS - age 30 - born Newent
Edwin DAVIS - age 8 - Upleadon.
So, Charles is on Page 1 (Edons Hill) and your George is on Page 14, which is headed Edons Hill at the top of this page. Knowing my ancestors lived/or moved in 'groups' - think these two are brothers!!! - but as it's late evening !!! I could be wrong!!!
Elizabeth DAVIES is on the 1841 census of Upleadon (without Charles), but with her children
Charles age 20
Sophia age 10
Samuel age 8
Job age 6
Elizabeth age 4
Edwin age 1
So, George (Charles brother??/) moved to Upleadon by 1851
George DAVIS, Newent 1798 to 1871
Great, thanks.
I have some of this but not all, but i'm with you about the family being in groups. On the 1841 census i have a page where the place is listed as Bran Green, and of the 48 people listed, 26 of them are Davis's and i can link 14 of them. I'm sure the others will be related but as i can now go back one generation with the help and you and Slowhands, i'm looking to prove that they are all related. My George co-incidentally is two pages further on in Bran Green.
George DAVIS, Newent 1798 to 1871
Certainly a challenging surname DAVIS (as difficult as GRIFFITHS) to 'unraffle'
1861 census Upleadon
Charles DAVIS 40 (who is a Shoemaker?) born Newent (the other George was a Shoemaker)
Charlotte 38 born Newent
William HAYWARD, Wife's Son age 11 born Eastington
Anna M DAVIS age 9 daughter Scholar born Uptonleadon
then next door his father
Charles DAVIS - age 68 born Newent
Elizabeth DAVIS - age 63, born Herefordshire, Aston Ingham
John MILLER ? - Lodger, age 18 born Glos, Arm Hill
George DAVIS, Newent 1798 to 1871
Thanks again.
Yet more to look at. These aren't on my radar. As you said, Davis is easy in one respect as they are always there when you look for them, the trouble is sometimes there are too many and i end up going down routes i don't really want to.
