George DAVIS, Newent 1798 to 1871 (General)
Thanks both for the info.
I'm sure of everything going back from 1901 that the family stayed in the Newent area as agricultural labourers until my line went to Ross and then Bristol (Slowhand's first hunch)
George DAVIS and his wife Ann (nee Sparrow) where married on 14th Feb 1820 in Dymock and i have their children as Jeremiah, Josia, Andrew, Sarah Ann, Benjamin, Elizabeth and Paul (my direct descendent).
The name link as suggested therefore is that George's second born daughter (Elizabeth), was also the name of his mother (if his parents were John & Elizabeth DAVIS and he was baptised on 30th July 1797), and was also the name of his eldest sister (baptised 22nd Sept 1793).
If you can follow that and i can find no concrete proof otherwise, it looks like I'll take John DAVIS and his wife Elizabeth (nee STERRY) as George's parents and believe that my George DAVIS was the one baptised in 1797 and not 1798.
Any other comments and suggestions would be welcome, and thanks so far.
