HALE grave in Littledean (General)

by sidhalemm @, Ontario, Canada, Sunday, August 16, 2009, 12:31 (5652 days ago)

I was was wondering if somebody might be able to please visit the grave of John HALE 1756-1803 in Littledean? I would like to know if his wife is buried with him. I think his wife should be Hannah LODGE 1764-1848. I hope they have a grave marker. Thanks.

HALE grave in Littledean

Bill,
Have called in at Littledean Churchyard. No sign of a headstone for John HALE. Some of the very old stones are now badly weathered and practically unreadable. Your best hope, probably, is if the MIs were recorded sometime ago when, perhaps, the inscriptions were more legible. Will try to make some enquiries.
There are some very nice blackberries growing over the churchyard wall though!
Regards,
Eric

Regarding headstones

I took a photo of a gravestone hoping to be able to lighten or darken it on my computer but that did not work. So I placed some lunch paper (or you could use butchers/fish and chip paper) and did a rubbing with crayon. I had great success. Found out it wasnt mine but that is by the by.

Hope you enjoyed the blackberries. I am only getting frozen ones in NZ.

To sidhalemm,Ontario,Canada,Wed 7 Oct 2009.

I read your request re Littledean Churchyard and would like to email you the copies of legible Hale MI's I obtained from the Verger last year. If you can let me have your email address, I'll shoot them off to you. Chris.

I also have ancestors buried in Littledean Churchyard (mainly Guests and Newmans). Is the list of MI's which you have just for the Hale family or does it cover the whole grave yard? If the latter, I should be most grateful if you would email me a copy also.

Thanks
Martin Jones

Hi Martin,

Sorry for long delay in replying - been on holiday.

I only have three pages of the MI transcripts - those relevant to Hales, Headstones 1-15, 61-75, and 95-112. There are no Guests or Newmans recorded on those sheets, however if you write to or phone The Revd. Richard Wynn, Dip Th., The Vicarage, St. Annal's Road, Cinderford, Glos., (Tel: 822286), I'm sure he would be able to organise a full copy for you. He was very helpful to me when I called last September. He organised for the Verger of St Ethelbert's to take me on a tour of the church & churchyard and provide me with the Hale sheets. But don't call on a Monday, that's his day off!!

Hope this helps, Chris.

Chris,

Many thanks for the reply and info. This time, my apologies for the delayed response -- lost in a Vista to Windows 7 upgrade.
I'll give the vicar a call.
It would be great if this sort of MI information could somehow be made available on this site.

Martin
