Thomas WILLIAMS Cinderford

by DrDoug @, Thursday, December 03, 2009, 05:13 (5544 days ago) @ karen

My Great-Great-Grandfather was a Thomas Williams from Cinderford. I don't know if he was an umbrella maker, but suspect he was a coal miner. His father was John Williams and his wife was Louisa Combs. His son, Alfred, emigrated to the US with his family in 1910 and again in 1913. I don't know much about Thomas or his family and even less about the Combs.

Thomas WILLIAMS 1848 Penzance,Cornwall -> Cinderford

by DrDoug @, Thursday, December 03, 2009, 16:04 (5543 days ago) @ slowhands

Slowhands,

Thanks for the information. Part of my confusion is that I have my great-grandfather Alfred Williams' birth record and it gives Louisa's maiden name as Combs. It looks like you have the correct Thomas Williams - he was born in Cornwall (usually it is given in the census as Gulval - but Gulval is right next to Madron).

That also looks like a good match for Thomas' father, John Williams, (the family looks right), but there are two others in the Cinderford area that also match well. I know John Williams (as a widower) married Patience Morris (a widow) in 1851 - after the census - I have the marriage record. It is possible that his first wife was also Patience. I had found John Williams and Patience Daniels in the Gulval/Madron area, but not up in the Cinderford area, but wasn't sure if it was my John Williams or not.

Unfortunately, I am traveling at the moment and don't have all my information with me. When I get back home next week, I'll reconcile it with what I have.

But again, I really appreciate the info. Having the surname Williams and trying to match up a John Williams in the UK is a lot of fun. By the way, this John Williams' father is also John Williams. I know that from the marriage record of John Williams and Patience Morris.

My great-grandfather Alfred Williams married Matilda Dorrington (daughter of James Dorrington) and they emigrated to the US in 1913. The Bertie (Bert) Williams you showed is my grandfather. They settled in Pennsylvania - as coal miners. If anyone else is interested in this family, please let me know.

Thomas WILLIAMS 1848 Penzance,Cornwall -> Cinderford

by rookancestrybest @, United Kingdom, Tuesday, December 08, 2009, 20:44 (5538 days ago) @ DrDoug

I'm interested in those who went to live in the USA. Some of my family went to Canton in NE Pennsylvania where there appear to have been a large number of Welsh people. I know that Pennsylvania has a coal and iron industry which probably explains why they were all there.

Thomas WILLIAMS 1848 Penzance,Cornwall -> Cinderford

by DrDoug @, Tuesday, December 08, 2009, 22:38 (5538 days ago) @ rookancestrybest

My great-grandfather, Alfred WILLIAMS, was a coal miner and moved to Patton, Cambria, Pennsylvania, which is pretty much in the center of the state. He got a job in the mines there because the foreman, Fred MITCHELL, was also from Cinderford. I was born in Cambria County, Pennsylvania. None of my Williams relatives are left in the area, but I still have relatives on my mother's side and father's mother's side in the area. So, we keep in touch.

My great-grandfather actually immigrated to the US twice. The first time, in 1910, was with his brother Fred WILLIAMS. But Fred became ill and they went back to Cinderford. My great-grandfather, and later his family, re-immigrated in 1913.

According to my grandfather, during the period Alfred and Fred were first in the US his family lived in Troedyrhiw, Wales. I'm not sure what that connection is, but I did see that village mentioned in the Cinderford Baptist Church history. (I believe it was in connection with a minister that had come from there.) Any other connections that anyone knows about would be appreciated.

Another interesting thing that I found is that when Alfred returned to the US in 1913 he was traveling with a David WILLIAMS who was shown as going to Scranton, Pennsylvania. Both are shown as coming from Methyr Tydfil, Wales - although the address for Alfred's wife is shown as Troedrhiw. I have no idea who this David WILLIAMS is or his relation (if any) to Alfred Williams.

Troedyrhiw in the parish of Merthyr Tydfil

by slowhands @, proud of his ancient Dean Forest roots, Wednesday, December 09, 2009, 06:24 (5538 days ago) @ DrDoug

Both are shown as coming from Methyr Tydfil, Wales - although the address for Alfred's wife is shown as Troedrhiw

There is no conflict in the statement :-

Troedyrhiw or Troed-y-Rhiw, in the parish of Merthyr Tydfil

Its a mining area so a flow of people to and from Cinderford / FoD was happening.

Troed-y-rhiw (The Foot of the Hill) is a small town just 3 miles from Merthyr Tydfil in south Wales.

http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=3479982
http://www.alangeorge.co.uk/troedyrhiw.htm

just as a note :-
Cambria is the classical name for Wales, being the Latinised form of the Welsh name Cymru (Wales). So I guess the early settlers brought the name to Pennsylvania.
