Specialist in FoD genealogy (General)

by jane gould @, Thursday, August 20, 2009, 08:35 (5649 days ago)

I'm thinking about getting a genealogist to do some research on my Forest of Dean ancestors. Is there anyone who specialises in FoD genealogy? Does anyone have a recommendation of someone that I could use? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi Slowhands.

I have posted several messages about my Wood family from Brain's Green and have received some helpful information from you personally and others. But despite this I am still searching for further details about William Wood, born 1850, Elizabeth Wood, born c1854 and Ann Wood who would have been born c1874 (she appears in the 1881 census as a granddaughter aged 7) with William & Elizabeth Wood (nee Powell) and their son William (see above b. 1850). I have tracked Elizabeth through the census whilst she was in service in Bullo Pill with the Shiles (?) family in 1881 and with the Washbourne family in St Mary de Crypt, Gloucester in 1891. Their sister, Jane Anne Compton (nee Wood) who was my namesake and great grandmother has been fairly easy to trace.

What I would like to discover is whether William junior was ever married and whether Ann (born about 1874) was his daughter or whether she was the base born child of Elizabeth. William junior seems to have lived all his life in Brain's Green and there is a record on the FoD site of a William Wood who died there aged 75 in 1925 which would fit.

I have been worrying away at this for years and not getting anywhere in spite of the huge amounts of information on the FoD site for which I am eternally grateful.

Cheers. jane gould (now in Whitley Bay, Tyne & Wear)

Turley family of Blakeney Hill

by jane gould @, Sunday, August 23, 2009, 19:23 (5645 days ago) @ pclark

I have been doing a bit of digging and have found a child born to Walter and Annie Elizabeth in 1903 amongst the parish records on this site. He was born in 1903 and was called Walter William and the birth was recorded at Viney Hill. They were living at Lower Viney Farm and Walter's occupation was given as Mason. This seems to be a common occupation in this family living in Viney Hill.

Walter William goes on to marry Bernice J Lowe in July 1930 (registered at Westbury on Severn - found on Ancestry)

"mason" is a common occupation in the area because stone was quarried there - anyone working stone was termed "mason" not just the craftsmen who built churches etc :-)
