Samuel DUFTY b. abt 1861 d.1943 (General)

by unknown, Saturday, August 29, 2009, 04:48 (5640 days ago)

I'm wondering if someone could provide advice regarding the DUFTY family. I've recently received the last will and testament of Samuel DUFTY which states that he was born in Forest-of-Dean. On this website I've managed to find the marriage record for his parents being Thomas DUFTY and Hannah Maria LEWIS m. 25 Dec 1860. I also have a passenger list for Thomas, Hannah Maria and Samual DOUGHTY leaving London on 12 Jun 1864, bound for New Zealand. Therefore I'm presuming that Samuel was born sometime between end of 1860 and mid-1864. However, I've not managed to find a birth record anywhere (including other websites) for Samuel.

FYI - To confuse matters around the same period there is another DUFTY family with the father also being Thomas with a son named Samuel that emigrated to New Zealand, the difference is the wife/mother being Louisa CRADDOCK (this as far as I can tell is no relation).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,
Kylie.

Hi

I'm not 100% sure if they're the same family. I've managed to contact a grandson of Samuel today and he knows a fair bit about the realtionships, so if he comes up with any of those names or dates I'll let you know.

Thanks,
Kylie.

Samuel DUFTY 1862 ( one to consider)

by unknown, Monday, August 31, 2009, 07:02 (5638 days ago) @ slowhands

Thanks for that! I'm pretty sure that the Samuel b. 1862 is the right one. I managed to finally contact a Dufty in New Zealand that turns out to be the grandson of Samuel, who said that he was 2 years old when he arrived in NZ (emigrated 1864). I will see if the grandson has any paperwork to confirm birth date, otherwise I will order the record myself to see.

It turns out that this grandson also knew a great-great-uncle of mine who isn't related to the Dufty's, they were just mates...small world.

Thanks for looking up that stuff for me, some leads for me to follow up.

Another question...did the Dufty's originally come from Ireland do you think? Something I've been thinking about and Samuel's grandson also mentioned that the original spelling was DOUGHTY.

Cheers,
Kylie.

I have links to both Dufty and to Hannah Maria Lewis that married Thomas Dufty in 1860. I have so far not been able to link Thomas Dufty to the Dufty family that came from the Forest of Dean, I have his birth place as Bristol.
I would be willing to share what info I have on the Dufty family and the Lewis family if you are interested.
I do know that another Dufty family did leave the Forest of Dean and emigrated to New Zealand in 1862, they were Thomas and Louisa nee Craddock, they settled in New Zealand and had 8 children that I have found so far.

Dufty Family - Forest of Dean

by preest @, Tuesday, September 01, 2009, 17:04 (5636 days ago) @ Nicky

I have been trying to discover the whereabouts of THOMAS and HANNAH DUFTY after the 1861 Census for some time. Now I know that they emigrated to New Zealand. Thanks for that information.

I am a descendant of Hannah's older sister, ELIZABETH SUSANNAH LEWIS, born in BERKELEY, GLOUCESTERSHIRE 1st May 1841, who married WILLIAM HAMPTON at Parkend 1st February 1963.

Are you aware that Hannah's sister JANE LEWIS, her husband, WILLIAM KEAR and their 5 children also emigrated to New Zealand, sailing on the 30th September 1876,arriving in New Zealand in January 1877 and settling initially in Christchurch?

I received this information from a descendant of JANE and WILLIAM who lives in the North Island of New Zealand.

I hope this information is of interest to you.

I have quite a bit of info on the Lewis family, if you want any info please let me know.

Hello Nicky.

Thanks for your e.mail.
I am quite a novice at researching family history but I think that I have traced most of ESAU and SARAH LEWIS'S children except for HESTER/ESTHER LEWIS. I know that she married GEORGE WATKINS in 1856 at Parkend church and by 1861 had 2 children WILLIAM and SARAH JANE. Do you have any information about them? I wonder whether they moved to Wales possibly Monmouthshire.

With regard to JANE and WILLIAM KEAR I have been told that they sailed to New Zealand on the CARDIGAN CASTLE. They later moved to Australia but their daughter MARY stayed in New Zealand to marry JOHN HILL in 1881.

I shall be grateful for any information.

Regards Brenda

Hi

I've just received the marriage certificate for Hannah Maria Dufty (nee Lewis) second marriage (in Thames, New Zealand). Please let me know if you'd like me to forward the info to you.

I also have New Zealand birth and death certificates for Sophia Dufty (daughter of Hannah Maria and Thomas Dufty). There were 2 daughters called Sophia born to Hannah and Thomas but I can't find the birth records to the second daughter so if anyone has any ideas that'd be great!

Many thanks,
Kylie.

An earlier post said that William and Jane sailed with their 5 children to New Zealand. This can't be correct, unless my information is wrong. I'm currently trying to get birth certificates to verify my information. As far as I know the oldest child Oliver Kear sailed to America alone on the Abyssinia. He arrived 12 May 1880. This is how I am related to William and Jane(Lewis)Kear.

Dufty/Lewis/Kear Family - Forest of Dean

by unknown, Friday, August 19, 2011, 08:18 (4920 days ago) @ unknown

Hi Paul
The info I've scratched together does point to a William and Jane Kear and their family leaving the forest and going to NZ. See http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ourstuff/CardiganCastle.htm
This William Kear appears in NZ electroral rolls up until 1880-1881, he is then recorded in Glebe, New South Wales in 1888 in his daughter Fanny's marriage announcement. Mary (daughter born in West Dean in 1863) is recorded as remaining and marrying in NZ, and she is said to be the only one who remained in NZ. I haven't yet found a record for the family crossing the Tasman so I can't say for sure who went over to Australia, but this is not uncommon at that time. There is a record of an Oliver Kear marrying in New South Wales and a death record in NSW that states his parents as William and Jane.
I'm not a direct descendent of William and Jane so others probably have more definitive info.
Good luck sorting out the puzzle and look forward to knowing how you get on.
Kylie.
