Many people find reading messages in all upper case (Capital) or lower case (small) letters laborious and as a result they skip the message and quickly move on to the next one.

A search on the Castle Garden website http://www.castlegarden.org suggests that Job sailed to the United Sates in 1880. Here is the entry:
First name Last name Occupation Age Sex Arrived Ship Origin (Port) Origin (Ctry) Origin (Prov) Origin (Town)
JOB CARPENTER COLLIER 26 M 18 Aug 1880 SCYTHIA LIVERPOOL & QUEENSTOWN GREAT BRITAIN ENGLAND

The 1881 Census tells us that his wife Caroline and 3 children were in the Workhouse at Westbury on Severn:

Caroline CARPENTER Other M Female 28 Forest of Dean Domestic Servant
Mary Jane CARPENTER Other Female 4 Forest of Dean
Edwin John CARPENTER Other Male 2 Westbury on Severn
Rose Matilda CARPENTER Other Female 3 m Westbry on Severn

Source Information:
Institution "Workhouse" Westbury On Severn
Census Place Westbury On Severn, Gloucester, England
Family History Library Film 1341609
Public Records Office Reference RG11
Piece / Folio 2525 / 153
Page Number 6

And it would appear that Caroline married again in 1887:
Marriages Dec 1887
BYETT William Westbury S. 6a 466
Carpenter Caroline Westbury S 6a 466

Hopefully someone can help in finding Job after 1880.

Good luck
Mike

The 1910 USA census lists a Jobe Carpenter,56, coal miner born in England, who immigrated in 1881, in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. With him is a wife Susannah who also immigrated in 1881.

Hello All,

I am trying to find some information on the wife of Edwin John Carpenter.
All I know is her name was Anne E. (no Surname)
Anne E later married Frederick J Weyman

Would anyone know anything about Anne E (Annie)

Thank you
Gwenn

Hi Gwenn,
please can you add whatever extra info you have about these people, ie time and place ?.
I have searched both this site's PRs and GlosBMD without finding any Edwin John Carpenter at all, altho I have found an Edwin James Carpenter marrying in Cinderford in 1915. I've also searched FreeBMD but none of the Edwin John (or James!) Carpenters listed (before 1911) marry an Anne. After 1911 that site doesn't include full second names, so he could be any one of several "Edwin J Carpenter"s listed after that. I cannot easily find him in any prior threads on this forum.

From FreeBMD here's the marriage record which you've found, which at least points towards a time and place, being relatively recent means there will be less records available;

Surname First name(s) Mother/Spouse/Age District Vol Page
Marriages Mar 1963 (>99%)

CARPENTER ANNE [E-] WEYMAN ST.ALBANS 4B 487
WEYMAN FREDERICK J CARPENTER ST.ALBANS 4B 487

From the record image I think she is definitely "Anne E"
The other FreeBMD records suggest Frederick was not born near Gloucestershire or even the West Country.

So if you have any more info it would help, please, thanks.

----------------

UPDATE:

Looking at all the FreeBMD marriage records for all the Edwin J Carpenters post 1911, I now find this record which MAY be your Anne, but needs further work to be sure. Don't know why my search earlier didnt spot this, sorry !

Surname First name(s) Mother/Age District Vol Page
Marriages Sep 1911 (>99%)

Brooks Jesse Reading 2c 807
Carpenter Edwin J Reading
Goddard Bertha Reading 2c 807
Squires Annie E Reading 2c 807

FreeBMD shows birth records for several! Anne E and Annie E Squires in the likely 1880-1890 era, none are from our area at all, or Reading for that matter.
This also places some doubt on the 1963 Marriage Record being for our Anne aged 65+

?????

==================

IMPORTANT FURTHER UPDATE AND APOLOGY !

Clearly havinbg a bad day here, despite my "reading" the earlier posts in this thread I didn't see this rather obvious clue, SORRY Gwenn !

I cannot find his Birth record c1879 on FreeBMD, including searching "male Carpenter" etc.
Apart from confirming the above 1881 Census record, the usually helpful FamilySearch site doesn't give any more hard clues that I can find, apart from suggesting an "Edwin John Carpenter born England c1875" and his wife (not Annie) migrated to Canada in 1920.

Sorry for my confusion, busy day here, I'll try and revisit this again this evening.

Edward John Carpenter

by shepway @, Wednesday, February 01, 2017, 15:57 (2926 days ago) @ Gwenn

This does not appear to be straightforward. First of all Edwin was registered and baptised as Edward:

Births Mar 1879
Carpenter Edward John Westbury S. 6a 280

Year: 1879
Month: Jan
Day: 29
Parents_Surname: CARPENTER
Child_Forenames: Edward John
Fathers_Forenames: Job
Mothers_Forenames: Caroline
Mothers_Surname:
Residence: Cinderford Workhouse
Occupation: Collier
Officiating_Minister: Chris Jay Jones Vicar
Event: Baptism
Memoranda:
Notes:
Register_Reference: P354 IN 1/15
Page_Number: 183
Parish_Chapel: Westbury on Severn

In 1891 he is with his William Byett and his mother as follows:

Ruspidge
Given Name Surname Relationship Gender Age Estimated Birth Year Birth City or District Birth County Birth Country
William Byett Head Male 40 1851 Soudley, Glos
Caroline Byett Wife Female 35 1856 St Briavels Gloucestershire England
William Byett Son Male 17 1874 Ruspidge
Edwin Byett Son Male 12 1879 Ruspidge
Jane Byett Daughter Female 13 1878 Ruspidge
Eliza Byett Daughter Female 13 1878 Ruspidge
Clara Byett Daughter Female 7 1884 Ruspidge
Henry Byett Son Male 5 1886 Ruspidge
John Byett Son Male 3 1888 Ruspidge
George Byett Son Male 2 1889 Ruspidge
Phillip Byett Son Male 8/12 1890 Ruspidge

Moving on to 1901 we find the Byett family still in Ruspidge:
Household Number Name Relation to Head Age Estimated Birth Year Gender Birth Place
68 William Byett Head 50 1851 Male Soudley, Gloucestershire, England
68 Caraline Byett Wife 46 1855 Female St Briavels, Gloucestershire, England
68 Clara Byett Daughter 17 1884 Female Ruspidge, Gloucestershire, England
68 Harry Byett Son 15 1886 Male Ruspidge, Gloucestershire, England
68 John Byett Son 13 1888 Male Ruspidge, Gloucestershire, England

On the same page is this couple:
Household Number Name Relation to Head Age Estimated Birth Year Gender Birth Place
65 Edward J Carpenter Head 22 1879 Male Westbury on Severn
65 Mary A Carpenter Wife 21 1880 Female Shipley, Yorkshire, England

and it would appear that Edward married in Yorkshire:
Marriages Sep 1900
Carpenter Edward John Bradford, Y. 9b 90
Holmes Mary Ann Bradford, Y. 9b 90

Births Sep 1879
Holmes Mary Ann Bradford, Y. 9b 224

We then move on to 1911 and find Mary Ann back in Shipley but Edward is missing:
1911 Census:
3 Taylor St Shipley, Shipley, Yorkshire, England
First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Occupation Age Birth year Birth place
Robert Mann Head Married Male Platelayer Mid Rly 50 1861 Goote Yorks

Eric Carpenter Son - Male - 7 1904 Ruspidge Glouce
Alice Carpenter Daughter - Female - 9 1902 Bingley Yorks

A search of GRO Index finds the following births:

Finding Edward John in 1911 is proving a problem. This is the nearest match:

Edward John is listed in the Electoral Register in 1904 at Ruspidge
1904
Cinderford Ruspidge 1904 Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England Edward John Carpenter 1904 Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England

This together with the 1911 Census for Mary Ann suggest that they parted company.

We next find Edward in the 1927 Electoral Register and this gives us the full forenames of his then wife/partner

Gloucestershire, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1974
Forest of Dean 1927
Edward John Carpenter 1927 Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England Lower Ruspidge, Cinderford
Ann Victoria Carpenter 1927 Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England Lower Ruspidge, Cinderford

Next we find them in the 1939 Register:

FIRST NAME(S) LAST NAME(S) DOB SEX OCCUPATION MARITAL STATUS SCHEDULE SCHEDULE SUB NUMBER

Cause_of_death:

Register_Reference: P85/1 IN 1/16

and Anne marries in 1950:

Marriages Dec 1950
Carpenter Anne V Weyman F.of Dean 7b 697
Weyman Maurice CARPENTER F. of Dean 7b 697

Ann dies in 1992

Name: Ann Victoria Weyman
Birth Date: 9 Mar 1887
Date of Registration: May 1992
Age at Death: 105
Registration district: Gloucester
Inferred County: Gloucestershire
Volume: 22

This does not provide Ann(e)'s maiden name and we continue our searches.

Continuing on from my previous post we find that there is a Family Tree on Ancestry which suggests that Edward John Carpenter married Annie James in 1913. This is from the Index:
Marriages Dec 1913
Carpenter Edward J James Pontypridd 11a 1188
James Annie Carpenter Pontypridd 11a 1188

and that they had a son in 1914. This is from the GRO Online Index:
Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
CARPENTER, WILLIAM EDWARD HENRY JAMES
GRO Reference: 1914 D Quarter in PONTYPRIDD Volume 11A Page 1349

Annie is said to be the daughter of William Henry James and Isabella Watkins.
This is the marriage:
Marriages Sep 1884
JAMES William Gloucester 6a 473
Watkins Isabella Gloucester 6a 473

and this is Ann's birth:
Births Jun 1887
James Ann Victoria Cheltenham 6a 410

William Edward Henry CARPENTER married twice:
Marriages Dec 1933
Carpenter William E H Holder Westbury S. 6a 618
Holder Doris M Carpenter Westbury S. 6a 618

Marriages Mar 1948
Carpenter William E H Weyman F.of Dean 7b 827
WEYMAN Ivy E Carpenter F.of Dean 7b 827

It would appear that Ivy was the daughter of Maurice WEYMAN who married Anne V CARPENTER.

Thanks Mike, you are an absolute star !
How intriguing that the Weyman-Carpenter link crops up so often, yet doesn't seem linked with the 1963 St Albans record I found.

One question if I may, in perhaps the same way the name Harry is with Henry, do you or anyone else know if Edwin is a derivative of Edward ?.

As for the Edwin/Edward question I do not know. What I can say is that I have seen number of instances where the Enumerator has recorded the wrong name in Census returns.

Thank you very much for your replies to my question.

I came across a newspaper article which my Mother had and it reads:-

Happy Birthday Ann!
Mrs Ann Weyman of Ruspidge this week celebrated her 103rd birthday. Born in Cheltenham, she moved to the Forest of Dean when she married Forest miner Edward Carpenter, her first husband. Despite a fall three years ago, when she broke both wrist and a hip, Mrs Weyman is a regular visitor to Dilke Hospital and the Highview Centre. Unfortunately though, she is no longer able to accompany her family to matches at Cinderford Rugby Club, of which she is a great supporter.

My mother has written at the bottom of this article "Annie Carpenter - Aunt of A.E Drew March 9th 1990/Dec 1992
(I dont know what the dates refer too and unfortunately I can not ask my Mother)

A.E Drew is my Grandfather
The Mother of A.E Drew is Mary Jane Carpenter 1877
So Annie would have married Edwin/Edward John Carpenter 1879

1881 Census
Caroline CARPENTER Other M Female 28 Forest of Dean Domestic Servant
Mary Jane CARPENTER Other Female 4 Forest of Dean
Edwin John CARPENTER Other Male 2 Westbury on Severn
Rose Matilda CARPENTER Other Female 3 m Westbry on Severn

I would really like to find out more about Annie (maiden name) and hopefully I will one day.
Maybe I will try an ad in Dean Forest Mercury as my Mother did many years ago for family members.

Thank you once more
