George PHELPS bn abt 1851 married Lydia (General)
by reporter, Friday, October 02, 2009, 09:36 (5606 days ago)
Am seeking the marriage of George, son of Thomas Phelps and Charlotte Roberts, who married a Lydia (in censuses 1881, 91, 01), but can't spot the marriage in the parish records, BMD, IGI. Need the marriage to confirm or otherwise this George is the right one. The George who marries Sarah is a different one, son of John and "not mine". Any help, please?

Hi
You don't give any idea of where this marriage may have been but I assume it would be in the general area of FOD or GLOS.
Have you noticed on Free BMD there is a possibility?
June Q. 1879
George PHELPS at Hereford
One of the 2 females mentioned is called Lydia WOOD. You would have to check the certificate to see if this is yours.

Thanks - An interesting possibility; in the 1861 census she does appear of right age and place of birth, g'dau of "Edward Hidden" and his wife "Sarah Stidda" (according to the transcription) and presumed daughter of widow Hannah Wood. Anyone prepared to offer ideas on the original text? - I can't make it out! Her sib Edward was born Abinghall, same place as George's Parents Thomas Phelps and Charlotte Roberts.
Had discounted this initially as George and Lydia had two children prior to this marriage, George Ernest 1877 and Florence Louise 1878. [On re-examination, Florence Louise was born 15 months prior to Baptism 1 Aug 1880 Abenhall......and George Ernest has another place of birth - Ledbury, Herefordshire, on 1881 census......]
Update: here's some evidence that Lydia was Lydia Wood

George PHELPS bn abt 1851 married Lydia

In our tree we have a Thomas Phelps (baptism from this site - Aug 1821 Abenhal).
Thomas married Charlotte Roberts born abt 1823 East Dean (date and place of birth taken from census).
They had several children, including George Phelps, (baptism from this site -Dec 1849 Cinderford.
Our Phelps line descends from a marriage between Elizabeth Phelps (baptism from this site - Nov 1851 Cinderford) and Thomas Herbert (baptism from this site - Nov 1850 Ruardean)
Elizabeth's parents were:
John Phelps (baptism from this site - 1813 Abenhall) and Elizabeth Jackson (born abt 1823, age taken from 1841 census)
John's parents were:
James Phelps (baptism possible but not proven taken from this site - Dec 1778 Kempley, 1841 census gives possible date of birth as 1786)and Prudence Goode (possible date of birth 1786 taken from 1841 census.
Having now given as much information as I hold to the ancestral line of our Phelps, I believe there is a connection between the George Phelps born abt 1851, and who married Lydia.
If the person who posted the original query (or anyone else who is interested in this family) sends me a message off line I would be more than happy to provide the whole tree as it is much too large to post on the forum.
Regards Jean Herbert

This may or may not relate but I have found this entry on the passenger lists on FindMyPast.
Mr & Mrs Geo. E. PHELPS and infant
Occupation: farming
Ages 29, 26 and 1
Departure date: 28 June 1906
Port of departure: London
Destination port: Fremantle
Ship: Omrah
The age of George is right as born in 1876 but suggests if it is the same George he was
married and had family before he left England.

George PHELPS 1850 Hazel Hill / Horsepool Bottom
by helenb, Saturday, October 10, 2009, 10:39 (5598 days ago) @ reporter
Have found it interesting to read this thread as I hadn't caught on that George E Phelps was illegitimate. George PHELPS who married Lydia WOOD was my Great Great Grandfather through his son Thomas Walter PHELPS who married Blanche LEWIS (nee ROBERTS) in approx 1926. They had ten children between 1901 and 1915, the last being my grandfather Sidney PHELPS. Blanche had a son from her first marriage, Cyril LEWIS born in 1898. I do not know why they didn't marry until 1926 unless it was that her first husband died around the same time and she had not divorced him. It took a while to find the childrens birth registrations until someone pointed out that they were under LEWIS with PHELPS being taken as a middle name. They presumably dropped the Lewis when their parents married.
Lydia WOOD's mother Hannah WOOD (nee STIDDER) appears to have remarried by 1881 as George and Lydia's daughter Florence is staying with her grandparents in the 1881 census - William RUDGE and Hannah RUDGE. I have found an entry for a marriage of a Hannah WOOD on the freebmd site Qtr MAR 1862 Westbury S 6a 297 but the other side of the entry is missing. I am assuming that it could be William RUDGE.

There's a record for a Hannah WOOD marrying William RUDGE Q2 1876, Cheltenham, Gloucs. This appears to be the most likely as she is still shown as Hannah WOOD in the 1871 census. There definitely appears to be a case of history repeating itself in this family since Hannah's youngest son Walter Henry also appears to be born out of wedlock as Hannah is listed as single woman on his baptism record, George WOOD being shown as deceased on the baptism record of the middle child George WOOD.
Phelps Family George & Lydia

For seven years I have been looking for George Ernest, Ralph, and Florence. Children of George and Lydia. Their other child Thomas Walter was my Grandad. My father was called Ralph born 1905 but known as Robert or Bob ( I believe he was named after his Uncle). I found Ralph on 1901 census aged 10 with his parents. There was talk of someone in the family going to Canada but I had no luck so I switched to Australia and there they were on 1930 census 1. George Ernest and wife Rose Hannah nee Russell who married 1903 at Newham (George under the name of Ernest) they had a daughter in 1903 called Edith May.2 Ralph who married a widow at the age of 40 in 1939 and also their mother Lydia who died in 1939. Their graves can be seen on the internet in a well kept cementary at Kurri Kurri New South Wales. This district was a big mining area in 1900.George Ernest next living child was born in Kurri Kurri 1907 followed by 2 more living sons.
I would like to know when Ralph and his mother went to Australia I cant find them on 1911 census?
Here is a coincidence the person who went to Canada was Robert Yemm (son of Jane Phelps my Great Great Aunt)who married Leah "Kate" White from the Forest. They had a daughter Catherine "Kate" born 1898 in The Forest. Kate married a Roderick McKinnon in Canada and moved to America about 1919
In Australia George's daughter Edith May married a Harold T McKinnon but died 1924 aged 21 years.
Six years ago my own daughter married a John McKinnon in Bedfordshire his grandfather was from Tyree.
Great Grandad George died 1930 he lived Horsepool Bottom.I would love to know when his wife went to Australia
