Thanks - An interesting possibility; in the 1861 census she does appear of right age and place of birth, g'dau of "Edward Hidden" and his wife "Sarah Stidda" (according to the transcription) and presumed daughter of widow Hannah Wood. Anyone prepared to offer ideas on the original text? - I can't make it out! Her sib Edward was born Abinghall, same place as George's Parents Thomas Phelps and Charlotte Roberts.

Had discounted this initially as George and Lydia had two children prior to this marriage, George Ernest 1877 and Florence Louise 1878. [On re-examination, Florence Louise was born 15 months prior to Baptism 1 Aug 1880 Abenhall......and George Ernest has another place of birth - Ledbury, Herefordshire, on 1881 census......]

Update: here's some evidence that Lydia was Lydia Wood
