Is it meant to be Thomas and Ann Toll gate keepers, and son William?
the address is Elton(1871), there may have been a toll house at Elton corner and the junction with the Littledean road, I'm not local enough to know about the name Stenders Road? Stretches of road were owned/managed by people who employed the toll collectors, so Stender might have been the owners name?
They had to sit and watch the road so they could collect the toll from passers by, there was usaually a gate to stop people getting by without paying, and toll houses had special windows which allowed them to look up and down the road. There are some old photos of tollgates in the area, not sure if they are here!
Many toll houses were knocked down because they blocked the view at junctions once modern traffic arrived, I remember a few being knocked down about 45 years ago, they would be protected now.
William as road repairer filled in the holes, and they may have managed a stretch of the main Chepstow - Gloucester road out of Westbury, or the Littledean road, or both.
Where did you get the Stenders name from? Fred

I see it's 1881, Stenders road in Mitcheldean, this house may still be there, if I go that way I'll see if I can find it. Fred

Stenders road is the Drybrook road out of Mitcheldean that goes up to Drybrook, and many of the old houses survive in this part of the town.

What aspect of this are you interested in? William Bullock and Ann - my great-great-grand-parents. My father was brought up on the Stenders and I knew it well as a child.

Hi, My interest with your gg parents is with Ann Clarke, plenty of people are tracing the Bullock line, but Ann's father remains a mystery, his name is listed as James on their marriage certificate. Ann had a child in 1837, her name was Sarah, she was shown on birth certificate as being "base born" no father mentioned. I can trace Sarah through her life but Ann's birth & parents are still a mystery?
Many thanks for your posting

Hi my interest in Ann is tracing my wifes family tree, she was my wifes ggg mother, I am trying to fill some social history with her line, so many people just put facts on the tree & forget what really matters! It has been really interesting to attach a little history as well. Thanks for your reply it is appreciated & any info would on the toll house would be nice, or any info on Stenders Rd.
Many thanks
