James Jones, yeoman of Tidenham, born c1735 (General)

by Mike Jones, Thursday, October 22, 2009, 12:54 (5586 days ago)

With a name like Jones I am lucky to get this far but I'm now stuck. My Great(x3) Grandfather James Jones was married twice in Tidenham, firstly to Ann Wilddin in 1764 and again to Anne Harris in 1779. He died in 1810 and his headstone gives his age as 75, suggesting he was born in 1735. Unfortunately he was not born in Tidenham and the Parish Records of his marriages do not give his father's name.I have found eight James Jones' born around 1735 in the Forest of Dean, but which one? I would appreciate any ideas.

Does this ring any bells Mike?

Thanks Griff for your interest. I fear I have little to go on. My James Jones married in 1764 but had no children by his first marriage. There was another James Jones married in Tidenham in 1757 to Rachel who did have a number of children - James, Charles, Samewell, Mary, Franses, Valentine & George. This doesn't seem to be much help though. Thanks again.

Dear Griff

I think that they are mine. The Will I have for James Jones born c1747 however makes mention of his wife Ann Jones, his sons William, Thomas and James, (Named John in the Baptismal register and kindly verified for me; could possibly have been written as John by mistake) I think John aka James could have been the proverbial black sheep! Daughters Sarah (Peveral) and Mary (Hayman). There is no mention of daughters Ann or Jane so I will check these at some stage.

It does not mention his wife's maiden name but I had thought it could be Ann Harris now reading Mike's posts I am not so sure. I think Tidenham is about 5 miles distant from Hewelsfield. So, Ann maiden's name is alas still not known to us.

Kind regards,
Pat

Hi Griff, I'm sorry your message pass me by somehow. As far as I can see I fear this is not my James Jones. My James married Ann Wilddin in Tiddenham in 1764. Ann Willdin was born in Ruardean in 1735 I think. I don't think they had any children. Ann died in 1778.
My James Jones then went on to marry Ann Harris in Tiddenham in 1779. They had James, John, Edward and Mary. Ann Harris was born in Ruardean in 1755.
Thanks for your interest. Mike

Hi, Mike,
I have been having the same problems with our surname and try as I may, my direct male goes back to my 2xGGF Daniel Tanner JONES born Chepstow 1792. His baptism shows his parents as Thomas and Alice, but my enquiries/research have been fruitless.
Now a possible link with you as I think I share relations one generation ahead of you.
My father's mother was a CLUTTERBUCK which has been an easier name to research and I come to her GM, Ann JONES who was born at Tidenham 1819 and baptised Anne 20.6.1819. Her parents were James a Gardener born at Tidenham 1781 and baptised there 3.6.1781, her mother is recorded as Anne (nee Sage born 1786 at Camely, Somerset. Ann JONES (B 1819) was married to Thomas CLUTTERBUCK (b 1823 Alvington)at Tidenham 20.6.1846.
I beleive James and Ann SAGE would be my 3xGGP's and it would follow that James JONES born at Tidenham 1758 and baptised there 16.7.1758 would be my 4xGGF. I would concur that his 2nd wife was Anne Harris and that he died in 1810.
I look forward to hearing from you Mike

Hi Lewis,
Great to hear from you. I am beginning to give up hope but you have revived my interest. Thank you.
Yes I have that James Jones (b1781)was a Gardener in Tidenham with 4 Acres and is shown in the 1851 census. He was the eldest son of James Jones and Ann Harris (m1779). I also have Ann Jones (b 1819) daughter of James (b1781) and Ann. Here I have a problem as I believe that James (b1781) married Ann Galloway on the 24 Oct 1802 in Gloucester St Nicholas, and that Ann Galloway was born in 1785 in Somerset Cancery, (Castle Cary??)
James Jones (B1781) was the eldest brother to my 3xGGF Edward Jones (b1795 in Tidenham).
Do we have a hiccup here? Look forward to hearing from you again.
Best wishes. Mike

Hullo again Lewis, I have found Ann Jones' Marriage to Thomas Clutterbuck. I have also checked again regarding James Jones' wife Ann's maiden name. I had thought it to be Galloway, born in the Somerset Chancery in 1785 but looking at my family tree I see that James and Ann baptised their second son William Thomas Sage Jones (b 1812). Also their youngest daughter (b 1813) baptised her daughter Ann Sage Turner (b 1866). therefore I think you are right and Ann's maiden name must have been Sage. If you have any information as to her family I would be very interested. If I can help further please say so. Best wishes, Mike
