Ann HUMPHRIS (or HUMPHRIES) living in East Dean 1851 (General)

by Adrian Green, Sunday, November 08, 2009, 12:35 (5569 days ago)

I am trying to find out some information about Ann HUMPHRIS (or HUMPHRIES) who is on the 1851 Census as living in East Dean with her 3 children, Edward, Mary Ann and Elizabeth.

Ann was born in Somerset, but the children born variously in Awre and Westbury. Intriguingly, her occupation is shown as ‘receiving pay from the father of her children’ but no father is shown on Mary Ann’s birth certificate.

The ‘Name of Street Place or Road’ shown on the census looks like ‘Gibraltar’ – I believe this might in some way be related to the Blakeney Hill Stone mine, but can anyone tell me any more about the area or recommend any source of information I can refer to?

Many thanks for this. The marriage informationn is new to me but consistent with other information I have. If the Ann is who I think she is, her brother is Samuel Humphries, a mariner (and later channel pilot) of Pill, Somerset whose father is also named as John Humphries, labourer. I think you've helped me through a brick wall!

Adrian,

The Blakeney Hill Stone Mine was indeed also locally called "Gibraltar", I gather the name Gibraltar also appears on the Deeds of of the Blakeney Hill Chapel.

After I "re-discovered" this mine in 1992 from which a silver grey stone was mined, I wrote a long article which was published in the New Regard (Journal of the FoD Local History Society) Number 10, 1995 ASBN 0950 - 8236.

This also contains photographs of mine owners and of some of the miners in the late 1920's and gives some of the mine history. It contains the reference to some files at the PRO in Kew which you may also ind to be of interest.

I hope you can locate the article and that it is of interest.
