Elizabeth Ann Lucas (General)
by rookancestrybest , United Kingdom, Tuesday, November 24, 2009, 21:47 (5553 days ago)
I have a letter written by Elizabeth Ann Lucas between 1848 and 1850 to Mrs. Elizabeth Rook (nee Prosser). I know nothing more about her apart from her signing her name as her cousin at the end of the letter. She also refers to a Mrs. Kathleen Marshall which is rather interesting as Elizabeth Prosser is referred to as either as with surname Prosser or Mrs Marshall in one of the Mormon records. I am wondering whether she might have been married another time and that Marshall was the name of a previous husband?
The date can only be as stated above because she refers to a baby called Jane. Elizabeth and Joseph Rook had a child called Jane who was born on 2/5/1848 in Coleford and who died in April 1850 at Coleford. I cannot find the link between either Marshall or Lucas though it is likely that they could have been from over the border in Wales.

Thanks for this I think that you have, as usual, solved a mystery and been of great assistance. This branch of the family has strong links with Pontypool so this is likely to be on the right tracks. I will print off what you have written and look at it more closely before returning to you on it. Thank you once more, you really are a sleuth!
....I've had chance now to study the info.
Elizabeth Ann Marshall signs herself as cousin to Elizabeth Rook (nee Prosser).
You certainly have the right Elizabeth Prosser marrying Joseph Rook. She had definite family links with Pontypool/Usk/Llandogo and the family said there was some connection with Ross on Wye and Hereford.

I am extremely grateful for you solving this mystery as at least two of my mother's cousins have searched for years (decades before there was the Internet)and so have I for this information. I am also amazed that you have kept on looking since I posted this such a long time ago. The family story is that Eliza Agnes Prosser's father, died in a farming accident (fell onto a pitchfork or something similar). What I can't understand is why she went by her mother's surname if her father's surname was known and if, as is evident in the information I have, that she was in touch with his family. I am wondering whether her mother did or didn't marry him and if he died shortly after the daughter's birth?
I know though that her uncle, David Prosser and his wife Esther brought her up and that they lived in Lower Cwm, Pontypool, so perhaps it was more convenient for her to call herself Prosser while living with that side of the family.
It seems strange to me that the surname of the father seems to have been covered up by the family and I am wondering whether this may have been because Mr Marshall never married her mother or whether there may be more to it than that?!
