Slowhands,

Thanks for the information. Part of my confusion is that I have my great-grandfather Alfred Williams' birth record and it gives Louisa's maiden name as Combs. It looks like you have the correct Thomas Williams - he was born in Cornwall (usually it is given in the census as Gulval - but Gulval is right next to Madron).

That also looks like a good match for Thomas' father, John Williams, (the family looks right), but there are two others in the Cinderford area that also match well. I know John Williams (as a widower) married Patience Morris (a widow) in 1851 - after the census - I have the marriage record. It is possible that his first wife was also Patience. I had found John Williams and Patience Daniels in the Gulval/Madron area, but not up in the Cinderford area, but wasn't sure if it was my John Williams or not.

Unfortunately, I am traveling at the moment and don't have all my information with me. When I get back home next week, I'll reconcile it with what I have.

But again, I really appreciate the info. Having the surname Williams and trying to match up a John Williams in the UK is a lot of fun. By the way, this John Williams' father is also John Williams. I know that from the marriage record of John Williams and Patience Morris.

My great-grandfather Alfred Williams married Matilda Dorrington (daughter of James Dorrington) and they emigrated to the US in 1913. The Bertie (Bert) Williams you showed is my grandfather. They settled in Pennsylvania - as coal miners. If anyone else is interested in this family, please let me know.
