Railway to Whitchurch (General)
Can anyone advise me what year the railway line arrived in the Whitchurch/Goodrich area. I am trying to ascertain the type of travel available (apart from horse and cart) for a family from this area (with luggage and several children) to reach Liverpool to board a ship to Australia in 1856.

Railway from Whitchurch / Ross area
The line from Monmouth to Ross-on Wye was built by the Ross & Monmouth Railway
under an Act of July 5, 1865 and opened on August 4, 1873.
It was worked by the GWR from the outset, although the local company
maintained its nominal independence until 1922.
However if you travelled by foot or cart to Ross on Wye then :-
The 'Hereford, Ross and Gloucester Railway' built the line due to an Act of Parliament
being passed in 1851. The stretch was opened on 1st June 1855.
then
Gloucester -> Birmingham -> Crewe / Liverpool by rail

Thank you for your prompt reply. This information helps a great deal and adds some background to their voyage.

It would also be possible for them to go by boat to Liverpool and board the ship to cross the Atlantic once they reached Liverpool. They could have travelled by boat from a number of places in Western England or South Wales.

Thank you for your reply. I cannot put my hand on the reference but I seem to recall a mention of travel by railway to Liverpool/Birkenhead in one of the early family bibles or diaries. I was curious to know where the nearest railway station would have been from their home in the Whitchurch/Goodrich area when the family departed in 1856.
