Stowfield House, which he (H. W. Smith) built on Tumps hill before 1920 in grounds including a lodge on the Lydbrook road, (fn. 36) became a boys' home at the end of the Second World War and was a geriatric hospital from 1956 (fn. 37) to 1993. Enlargement of the house has incorporated an outbuilding in it. (fn. 38) In the mid 20th century a small housing estate was created on the hillside north of Stowfield House and a few houses were built further east on the Lydbrook road. Southeast of Stowfield House H. W. Smith built a pair of cottages, (fn. 39) and in 1993 a charitable trust opened a residential home for disabled people in new buildings just above the house. (fn. 40)

Stowfield house

I realize this thread is old but I am also looking for information on Stowfield House. Specifically from the time when it was a boys home after WWII. Does anyone know if there is a resource for accessing records from Stowfield House during the 1940s?

Any information would be most appreciated.

Many thanks for the link. I have run across that site before. I'm working on a family history project and am hoping to track down some records on the boys that lived there.
