Elizabeth Jenkins b Newland 1833 (General)
by tonyjenkins , Thursday, January 07, 2010, 21:20 (5509 days ago)
I am trying to trace Elizabeth Jenkins b 1833 D/O James Jenkins and Susannah Jenkins.
Her father died in 1835 when she went to live with her Grandparents Peter and Esther Jenkins.
I jave just recieved a copy of the will of Esther dated 1861. The will indicates that Elizabeth was still living with Esther (then a widow) near Upper Crofts Clearwell.Upper Crofts was once the home of William Wood. He could possibly be the father or brother of Esther
The property was left to Esther Williams the married daughter of Peter and Esther Jenkins.
Elizabeth Jenkins dissappears following her grandmothers death.
Can anyone help please?
Could anyone also help me locate Upper Crofts near Clearwell
Kind Regards
Tony Jenkins

Thanks
The Marriage James to Susannah Phipps is related but is not the James S/O Peter and Esther.
James the S/O Peter and Esther married Susannah Jenkins D/O Walter Jenkins Trealy farm Cwmcarvan at St Peter and St Paul Bath.
Following the death of James both of their children returned to live at Trealy farm with the brother of Susannah also Walter. 1841 welsh census.
Susannah subsequently married the brother of James (Richard) at Ganarew abt 1839 when Walter returned to live with his mother wilst Elizabeth went to live with her grandparent Peter and Esther.
Many Thanks for your help

Thanks all
Elizabeth Wood Jenkins appears to be my favourite, I have just sent for a copy of the marriage cert.
Your thoughts on Croft/Cross seem to be logical as I believe they were living close to the Wyndham Arms (Cottages to the rear, close to the well)
Within the will Messuage is spelt Mesfuage therefore the theory re cross crofs is logical.
My concern re the location rest with the suggested size of the property which
the will of Esther indicates includes Dweling house with stable, workshops, and apportenances. The property was once owned by William Wood.
Can anyone suggest an alternative location based on the abode of William Wood pre 1851.
This does not fit with the property to the rear of the Wyndham Arms.

On the Gloucestershire Records Office Genealogical Database www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/familyhistory there is a Will of a William WOOD (U) 1832 (Nailer) of Newland/Clearwell - may be he had workhouses making nails???? Esther was also a NAILER!!! (1861 census)
Burial of William WOOD 31 December 1831 at Newland (of Clearwell)- age 85 years
'Abundant clear water from the spring behind Wyndham Arms encourged the development of tanning and nail making and also gave the village its name'
Upper Cross location

the notes so far shared seem consistent with the corner of Clearwell opposite the Cross , near the Wyndham Arms and the Spring.

What might look to you like an "f" rather than an "s" is actually not an "f" but a "long s" used widely both in handwritten and published texts of that time.At the time it would never have been confused for an "f" it is only us who aren't accustomed to seeing it who see it as an "f"!!!

I am also investigating the Jenkins family of Clearwell who lived in the house I now live in. We are next to the well, and the Wyndham Arms and the 1851 census clearly puts the Richard/Susannah Jenkins family next to the Wyndham, confirmed by the 1856 Kellys directory. Our house is split into 2 now but was once one largish house until the 1850's. This would seem to cnfirm the Upper Cross connection. Also Peter and Esther and granddaughter Elizabeth are showen in 1851 as living the other side of the Wyndham probably in one of thecottages up towards the school. Perhaps you could post you current thoughts on this.

The 1840 Tithe Map for the parish of Newland clearly shows where Peter JENKINS was living, or at least the property that he owned. It is fronting the road that runs northwest to southeast through Clearwell, directly opposite the road that runs southwest towards the castle. I can put an image on the web if anyone is interested.

Hi David
I also have a Richard and wife Susannah Jenkins plus his brother William and wife Hannah Jenkins living in Clearwell on the 1841 census.
William was working as a nailer and was left the property indicated following the death of his mother Esther.
I do not know where either Richard (my 3 x GGrandfather) or his brother William, were living in 1841. Would you be so kind as to either post the list or let me know the plot numbers for Richard and William?
I have access to a good supplier for Pre War Austin spares, (Available Austin of Arley).
Give me a shout if you need anything you are unable to get in Austrailia.
Kind Regards

Hello Tony, and many thanks for your advice re. Austin spares.
Unfortunately, Richard and William do not appear on the list of owners. The schedule that I have lists owners only; there is also a schedule of occupiers, but I don't have a copy.
The only other JENKINS listed as an owner in Clearwell is a George, plot # 1852.
That was a cottage and garden at the eastern end of the map that I posted.
I see on the 1841 census, that a neighbour of William, was a William BROWN. Now on the tithe map, plot # 1855 is owned by a William BROWN - only two doors away from George. Does this suggest that the property that William was living in was in fact owned by a George? Just to complicate matters the land owned by William BROWN did not have a building on it. It is shown as "arable" and named Brown Hill.

Hi Malcolm
It is good to hear from you.
Are you researching the history of your house or are you related to the Jenkins family?
I have managed to trace the family back to 1634.
The family moved to Clearwell between 1660 and 1680 having gained a pardon from the Cromwellians (The Jenkins family fought on the side of the Royalists)
The family are from Glamorganshire.
There are links to the Awbrey (Aubrey) family of Hay on Wye. William Jenkins married Eleanor Awbrey about 1675.
I believe the family fought with the Royalist at Gloucester/Worcester. They were inprisoned at Gloucester pardoned and originally settled in the Redmarley area (west of Tewkesbury)
I am currently investigating connections with Raglan Castle and believe the family used stone from the castle to build cottages in the Newland and Clearwell (Clowerwall) area. The Jenkins family have connections with Raglan.
The family have strong connections with the quarry industry (stone cutters) between 1780 and 1920.
I am attending Coleford Carnival on Easter Monday (I have a 1936 Austin York).
My wife and I are staying at the Tudor House Clearwell on the night of Easter Sunday and would be happy to share any other information I have on the family or history of the area.
Kind Regards
Tony Jenkins
