If you look on the Church of Latter Day Saints file (under Pedigree Resource File) - a 'fellow' BALDWIN, has submitted the following information.

Charles BALDWIN (c1755 - Ruardean) married Elizabeth LAMB 28 February 1782 - Ruardean

Father: Charles BALDWIN and Betty (unknown)

Charles BALDWIN (c1738 - unknown) - parents: James BALDWIN and Sarah ROBBINS *

* parents Henry ROBBINS and Joane PAINTER c1680

James BALDWIN (c1693 unknown) - parents Charles & Elizabeth

However, if you look at the FOD records for Baldwin (Ruardean) - there is a marriage of Charles BALDWIN to Elizabeth LAMB - Year 168182

you are looking at the wrong Charles and Elizabeth. Charles and Elizabeth Lamb had 5 children.
Ann 1683, Mary 1686, Margaret 1690, JAMES 1693 and Warrand 1689.
IGI Ruardean
Charles and Betty had James 1785, Betty 1781, Hannah 1779, William 1791, Charles 1783, Winy 1797, Amelia 1787, Cornelius 1794, Cheasey 1799, Thomas 1803 and Richard 1789.
I hope this helps.

To add to the confusion, the name Betty is often used in that form and baptisms take place using that name. However, the name Betty is often also a derivative of Elizabeth in the same way as Tom is to Thomas and Fred is to Frederick, both forms are used in baptism in the shortened as well as the full version of the name. Bearing in mind that in many cases the parents could not read or write and knew no different.

With regards to the parents of those mentioned by Teresa - i.e. James 1785, Betty 1781, Hannah 1779, William 1791, Charles 1783, Winy 1797, Amelia 1787, Cornelius 1794, Cheasey 1799, Thomas 1803 and Richard 1789. I have the parents as Charles Baldwin and Elizabeth Dovey, married 28 Aug 1778 Ledbury. Elizabeth Dovey baptised 24 Jun 1759 Ruardean, parents William Dovey & Elizabeth Tingle. The will of William Dovey of Ruardean 1795 refers to son-in-law Charles Baldwin.

It is difficult to be 100% accurate with information this far back so I cannot guarantee that the information is correct. In my case it is not that important as neither Charles Baldwin or Elizabeth Dovey are related to me, however I have numerous relations from their dependants.

Teresa,

I have some interest in the Baldwin family, having 426 Baldwin's in my Family Tree. I have always regarded James Baldwin 1720 as a bit of a mystery, he either died before 1744 or there were two James Baldwin & Sarah's producing children in Ruardean.

I note you have a James Baldwin 1720. I note there is a baptism 29 May 1720 at Ruardean, parents James Baldwin & Sarah. This fits nicely with a marriage between James Baldwin & Sarah Barnard 27 Dec 1719. There is however another James Baldwin baptised to James Baldwin & Sarah on 18 Mar 1743/44, who I reckon married Jane Jones 22 May 1768 Hope Mansell. The IGI notes a marriage between James Baldwin & Sarah Robbins as shown by M P Griffiths as being the parents of Charles Baldwin 1738, could they be the parents of James Baldwin 1743/44. Family research is so complicated !!

My real interest here is that Thomas Baldwin 1746, son of James Baldwin & Betty Brain (married 22 May 1743 Newland) had among their 9 children a son Moses who married my 5 times Great Aunt Lucy Marfell, so I would be interested in knowing the parents of the James Baldwin who married Betty Brain.

Perhaps not apposite to your researches, but an Elizabeth Baldwin born 1887, married youngest brother Albert 1882 - 1950 of my grandfather, in 1908. Her father was licencee of the White Horse, Soudley.

Baldwin sounds like an Anglo Saxon name but then there was the mighty Richard Thomas and Baldwins in South Wales.

Re: Baldwin being an Anglo Saxon name.

After the Battle of Hastings William the Conqueror awarded a Baldwyn the Sherriff a large part of the west country. Ref: The Norman Conquest. Author H.R.Lyon. So the question is. Was he Anglo Saxon or a Norman Baron???

Interesting, that suggests that he was a Norman. Norman = North = Norse = Germanic as the Normans were.
