Louis MARFELL bn 1866 Ruardean - marriage to Evangelina (General)
by reporter, Sunday, January 17, 2010, 11:37 (5499 days ago)
Evangelin(a)(e) Roberts 1864 is attributed by several researchers to have married Louis Marfell in 1910 or 1911 but I have not been able to find any reference to this marriage. It could not (or perhaps SHOULD not) have been in 1910, because on the 1911 census she is still married to William Morgan and living in Ruardean. Even a marriage in 1911 would be doubtful. Louis/Lewis Marfell was still with wife Sarah Ann Marshall on the 1911 census. There is a record of Sarah's death q2 1911, but not one for William.
In 1913 Evangelina was with husband Louis on board the "Meganic" for Quebec,en route to LaSalle Illinois, with "daughter" Evelyn aged 10 - most certainly Evelyn Morgan, therefore Louis's stepdaughter. This places the marriage between April 1911 and July 1913.
Does anyone have any further info or pointers to the marriage or relationship, please?

Its Jim who puts the marriage down to May 1911 after the 1911 census ( place unknown)

There is speculation this happened in America ( Canada or maybe on the ship ?)

Louis Marfell was actually Lewis Marfell born 18 Dec 1866, I have his birth certificate. He was always known as Louis, he had a son Louis and a grandson Louis. I have a photograph titled "Louis, Louis & Louis". Some of my photographs and information are from his great grandaughter, Pam Broviac who I have met and drove her and some of her family around the Forest of Dean, visiting graveyards - as you do !!
Lewis (Louis) Marfell married Sarah Ann Marshall 14 Sep 1884 Forest Church, I have the marriage certificate. The 1911 Census took place 2nd April 1911. Sarah Ann Marfell nee Marshall died 18 May 1911 and is buried Ruardean 21st May 1911.
I have the death certificates for Lewis (Louis) and Evangeline. On Evangeline's certificate (American) she is shown as the wife of Louis Marfell and her father is shown as Henry Roberts.
I have the date of marriage to Evangeline as 20 Jun 1911, but do not know where and as per my notes on the link provided by Slowhands - (growing grass and feet spring to mind).
Below are the notes for Louis on my Family Tree :
Free Miner, registered as Lewis Marfell age 21 The Pludds, 12.8.1887 ID 2145
Shown as Louis on 1881 & 1901 Census.
1891 Census East Dean
Lewis Marfell 24 Coal Miner Ruardean
Sarah A 22 East Dean
Agnes 5 East Dean
Emily 2 East Dean
1901 Census East Dean
Louis Marfell Coal Miner East Dean
Sarah 33 East Dean
Agnes 15 Apprentice Dressmaker East Dean
Emily 12 East Dean
Mirium 9 East Dean
Ethel 7 East Dean
In the 1930 census Louis and Evangeline are living in LaSalle in the home of Talcott Barnes(who was born in Wisconsin). Louis is a gardener and Evangeline is a cook for the family.
In 1920 they are also living in LaSalle. They state that they both arrived in America in 1913. No children are living with them in either year.

Thanks Jim (et al)
I'd got most of the info, but, once again, an actual record of marriage is missing. Given the above data, it's pretty certain we have all the right people! I've been in touch with Pam Broviac, but she has only the same info. Seems the death record is the strongest evidence.
On the passenger list of the "Megantic" July 1913 she is listed as wife, so quite possibly married on board. [Just double checked -NOT listed as wife, both just "m" married.....was there a Gretna Green in Canada?? They didn't cross into the USA until 1915....a gap of 2 years]

Hello all. Evangeline Morgan (Marfell) is my great-grandmother and the daughter referred to (Evelyn) is my grandmother. Evelyn was born 8.21.1902. She always told us she came from England when she was 10, so this holds with the July 1913 crossing on Meganic. Years ago, I did much genealogy, still have an interest, but not the time for much research. I was thrilled to read this and perhaps get back into it. I do know that Evangeline and Louis (and Evelyn) lived for a time in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Back when I was doing research, which was pre-online, I searched for marriage records in both Edmonton and Illinois but was unsuccessful in finding anything. I'm not sure about a 1911 marriage date, the year at least doesn't seem correct. Additionally, Evangeline's husband was very much alive when she left - our family has always believed that they probably did not marry, but said they did. My father knows Louis as "grandpa Marfell." Evelyn died 8.6.1974 in Mendota, Illinois. I'm very interested in this if anyone else has any additional information to share. Thanks. Linda Hinzman (Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA).

Hi Linda
The date of the marriage between Lewis Marfell and Evangeline Amanda Roberts has always been a mystery. However the fact that Evangeline Married William Henry Roberts is not doubted. They married in Monmouth during the March Qtr of 1887. Registration number 11a 48. They did have a child before this marriage as their first child Sarah Lily was born two years earlier :

Hi Jim. I'm curious why you use Peglar for my grandmother's last name? I assume an error, because her name was Evelyn Maude Morgan, then Gardner when she married Howard Isaac Gardner. There were 4 children: Bonnie, Howard & Harold (twins) and William. Howard is my father. I have info on all of their descendants if you want it. Harold and William are deceased. If you want to e-mail me directly and take the conversation off this thread, my e-mail is [Deleted by admin - see Posting Guidelines]. I'm very interested in anything you may have regarding this line (Morgan/Roberts). Thanks! Linda

Hi Linda
Sorry about the confusion regarding Evelyn she had for some strange reason been entered twice in my Family Tree (now corrected), the first correct entry as the daughter of William Henry Morgan and Evangeline Amanda Roberts, the second - incorrect entry I had Evelyn as the daughter of Hilda Kate Morgan 1895 and Victor William Arthur Peglar born 7th April 1893.
Having corrected my Family Tree as above we are no longer related. I am related to Victor William Arthur Peglar 6th cousin once removed as his mother is a Trigg.
I have today received an email from a Marfell cousin in Canada who has been following the debate. He used to be the main contact for One Name Study - Marfell Family, I met him in Vancouver a few years ago. He has given permission to add his thoughts :
Thanks Jim,
I have read yours and slowhands exchange on the FOD website, it covers the info. that I was going to discuss with Jean and yourself, but I would like to add my view of the situation which you may pass on if you wish.
A family rumour has been passed down by Louis's relatives in England that he ran off to America with a married woman, this was told to me some twenty years ago with no more details than that. Over the years it puzzled me until I came across the records on ancestry.com, these are the same records that you discuss on the website.
I have also not found a marriage certificate and actually I believe they did not formally wed. It would be very convenient and no questions would be asked if you just boarded the ship as Mr & Mrs with a young daughter, I don't expect that they asked for proof of those things, note it does show Evelyn as a MARFELL. Remember how convenient it was for Fred Marfell b. 1870 ** to change his parentage when he went to the USA and if it had not been for us, no one would have ever known!
A couple of question arise, what ever happened to Evelyn during those early years? and why did Evangalina take the one child with her? she had other children, some quite young.
** As explanation - Fred Marfell was illegitimate, I have (via this contact) a copy of his original birth certificate, also a copy of his forged one showing a father.

Jim and Others, thanks for the responses. Jim, would Hilda Kate Morgan be a sister to Evelyn then? The birth date you mentioned seems to correspond to the Kate Morgan in the census info. My grandmother Evelyn had two sisters who visited her in Illinois in the late 1960s or very early 1970s - Kate and Olive, although I see no Olive on the census records. Perhaps Olive is a middle name? Evelyn and her son William (and his wife Helen) visited Kate, Olive, and other family members in England around this same time.
Evelyn lived with Evangeline and Louis Marfell from the time they left England until she married as far as I know. Even though she may not be listed on the census data, I'm quite sure she was with them.
I too have wondered and speculated as to why Evelyn was "chosen" to accompany them, but have no definite answers. I think she was the youngest girl - maybe that had something to do with it.
I have quite a bit of information, some of it in written form from Jeff Sleeman (England relative - the son of either Olive or Kate - now deceased). I haven't actively pursued this for a number of years. In the next few days, I will dig out my records, review them, and if there's anything additional to add, I will post it here.
Thanks to all. Linda

Hi Linda
Of course Evelyn was the youngest girl, but not the youngest child, Ivor Orlando was born 1905 and Irving born 1907.
I have marriage detail for two of Evelyn's sisters; Adeline Frances "O" Morgan born 24 Dec 1892 married Frank Sleeman born Dec 1890 (he is a 4th cousin to me) two children William Stanley born 21 Dec 1912 & Dorothy Eleanor born 11 Sep 1914. I am going to assume that the "O" in Adeline's name is the Olive you mention. Evelyn's sister Hilda Kate born 1895 married Victor William Arthur Peglar born 7 Apr 1893 (my 6th cousin) they have 1 child (that I am aware of) Ramsey William Irvin born 1924.
Obviously the Jeff Sleeman you have corresponded with is descended from Frank Sleeman. I believe that Frank Sleeman died in 1953 but do not know where.
I have emailed some certificates and pictures to you.

Hi Bob
Perhaps to assist with your relationships; the parents of Frank Sleeman were Elijah Sleeman 1848 & Elizabeth L. Parents of Elijah 1848 were William Sleeman 1823 & Mary Hale 1820. Parents of Mary Hale were Joseph Hale 1776 & Mary Baldwin 1781, parents of Mary Baldwin 1781 were Richard Baldwin 1744 & Mary Herbert 1748.
Now we get back to the familiar question - Who were the parents of Richard Baldwin 1744. They are not, as some people have suggested James Baldwin 1693 & Sarah Barnard, their son Richard Baldwin was born 1731.
