I suspect there is more than one WILLIAMS family with a branch in St Briavels.

We need names and dates to be of further help.

The furthest back I have is Richard Williams who married Hannah Read on Oct 22 1794 at St B but I have no birth date for either of them. Sorry!

Slowhands is correct, there are at least 3 different Williams Families in St Briavels - Mine moved there from Trelleck c1855.

As far as I know this branch hasn't moved into the area after 1794 though before then i have no idea - there seems to be no connection from Richard Williams to any parents anywhere.

Richard Williams ?-?
Hannah Read ?-?
Richard Williams 1796-1796
Joseph Williams 1798-?
Richard Williams 1800-?
John Williams 1803-?
George Williams 1806-?
William Williams 1810-1893
Thomas Williams 1814-?
Hannah Williams 1817-?

(All children born in St B I think)

This is the top of my tree with the Williams in the area and I was sent a load of family tree from (i think) this history society. Whoever it was gave be some tree above as far back as I had got but we are not sure if it is as there are records missing. would anyone have access to wills or any other way that i could prove that suspected parents of Richard really are.
Thanks a lot!

Hello Austyn,

I have come to a full stop with the Williams family of St. Braivels. John Williams of St. Braivels and Mary Philips of Chepstow married in 1796 at Chepstow, Children born at St. Braivels were William 1797, John 1798 (my 2 x great grandfather), George 1803 - 1813, Charles 1805, Temperance 1808 and Amos 1812. I cannot find the deaths of John and Mary Williams. Mary was baptised in 1778 at Chepstow but there are so many John Williams but none that fit at St. Braivels.

Can you help?

Its often harder when trying to trace a more "plentiful" surname like Williams, Thomas, Jones etc

How sure are you that they stayed in the area ? Have you look in adjoining parishes for the burials ?

i.e.

If this is your john

1851
John Williams abt 1800 St Briavels, Gloucestershire, England Head Thornbury, Gloucestershire
Sarah Williams abt 1801 Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales Wife Thornbury, Gloucestershire
Mary Ann Williams abt 1831 Oldbury, Monmouthshire, Wales Daughter Thornbury, Gloucestershire
Jane Williams abt 1837 Thornbury, Monmouthshire, Wales Daughter Thornbury, Gloucestershire

Hello Slowhands,

Yes you are spot on with the 1851 census for John and Mary Williams. It took me twenty years to find them as they had all but one of their children in Chepstow. ie George 1822, John (my great grandfather) 1825, James Meechan (he was baptised at St. Braivels in 1827) Mark 1829 (I have just found his descendants in Australia) and then the two girls one Mary Ann in 1831 Chepstow and the youngest abt 1837 Thornbury. I have been able to follow the four boys but not the two girls.
Does this help?

WILLIAMS Family St Briavels

Alice:
Just read your message. My WILLIAMS people hail from Hewelsfield, (just down the road!) My earliest is Thomas Williams who married Jane 12 Nov 1782 in St. Briavels. They had two children. Sarah born Nov 1783 in Hewelsfield, and Henry born 24 April 1785 in Hewelsfield. My line comes down through Henry who had a daughter Caroline Williams who was born 4 April 1806 in Hewelsfield. She married John Worgan of Brockweir. Their daughter Ann married Richard Brown of Brockweir, and so begins my Brown line if anyone is interested further.
