One final word on this subject then we will get back to family history.

Just done a little testing.

Ignore the fact that it is a UK or US keyboard and also what is shown above the 3 symbol on the keybord. The key combinations depend upon what keyboard language you have set in your system preferences.

Set to British keyboard language, this is what you get.
alt and 3 returned #
shift and 3 retuned £

Set to US keyboard language, this is what you get.
alt and 3 returned £
shift and 3 retuned #

If your main object of using # character is to type it into a forum link, then it is far easier to copy and paste the complete link than typing it. Maybe you have tried that and not been successful when using your Mac. To confuse things a little more, if you are using the Windows key combinations to do the task they will not work on a Mac. On a Mac they are slightly different than Windows.

Copy is: command and C
Paste is: command and V

The command key is shown as the apple key on some keyboards.
