Connections with the Sea!

by rookancestrybest @, United Kingdom, Monday, February 15, 2010, 21:23 (5470 days ago) @ colindance

I notice he was a Royal Marine. I have noticed a lot of people in the Forest of Dean and South Wales had connections with the Royal Navy or other sea based professions. Ibn my family album I have a picture of a woman in a crinoline and it was taken at Devonport. I can only assume her husband may have had something to do with the Royal Navy or Royal Marines but she remains, for the time being at least, a mystery person! She will be related to my Forest of Dean relatives but I have yet to make the link!

Hi Colin
You've probably already come across this site: http://www.dance-family.com/ but if not it's worth making contact with Tom Bint who's put it together. As you'll see he's done an enormous amount of work and, I'm sure, would be helpful.

Hannah Louisa DANCE 1837 Plymouth -> Newland

by Bronwen @, Tuesday, February 16, 2010, 19:07 (5469 days ago) @ slowhands

Hope it is ok to post this here!
The original post refers to William DANCE and may well be related to
Hannah Louisa (Anna Louisa on the birth certificate) DANCE born 1837 in East Stonehouse in Devon who is my great great grandmother. The occupation of her father Joseph DANCE on her birth certificate is given as Private Royal Marines. Her mother’s name was Ann DANCE nee PEPRELL.
When Hannah married Richard BERROW on 4 November 1856 at St Peters Church in Clearwell her father Joseph was 'late' and a Royal Marine. The death you give in 1847 could well be that of the above Joseph.
I have really been concentrating on the BERROW (also Forest of Dean) side of the family but was very interested to read all the above and below comments. Especially the census returns with different spellings!

Would I be wrong to presume that when Joseph left the Royal Marines he would have returned to family in The Forest of Dean with his family? Ann Dance gives her birth place as Devon (Stockingham, Devon or Plymouth, Devon depending on which year), so I would I be right to think it might be Joseph that is referred to in the 1841 Census for DANEL born 1801, his age would be about right for marriage and children?

Thank you this has given me some more to look at!

Thanks for your post Bronwen,

Very interesting .If I am correct looking at all the information that has been posted so far.My Great ,great grandfather was William Henry Dance brother to your Great great grandmother Hannah Louisa Dance. If that is correct would that make us distantly related cousins?!
Both William and Henry were born in Plymouth and from your information Louisa was born in east Stonehouse which I see from google is the Royal Marine Barracks and Hospital.Thank you for the information of Ann Dance maiden name .Can you let me know the soure reference number of Hannah Louisa Dance birth certificate .I hope to trace her father Joseph back to the Forest of Dean.Good luck in your research of the Berrows side of your family

Kind regards

Ann DANCE nee PEPRELL 1799 - 1878 Starcross DEV -> Newland

Thanks for helping. Can I ask what the reference to Starcross Devon is.I see from the 1871 census AnnDance birth place listed as Farcrogs Devon
Thanks

Ann DANCE nee PEPRELL Starcross /Torcross DEV

by slowhands @, proud of his ancient Dean Forest roots, Wednesday, February 17, 2010, 18:24 (5468 days ago) @ colindance

I'm 60% sure that Starcross is what it says - its a "poor" transcription of the Census data.

transcribed as in Breconshire [!] rather than Devon in
1851
Ann Danes abt 1800 Starcross, Breconshire, Wales Head Newland, Gloucestershire

The modern parish of Starcross was created in 1828 from parts of Kenton and Dawlish.

However the other 40% of me goes to :-

In 1861
Ann Dance abt 1800 Stockinham, Devon, England Mother-in-law Newland, Gloucestershire

http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Stokenham/index.html
STOKENHAM, or Stockingham, a small pleasant village, 5½ miles E. by S. of Kingsbridge and near Torcross !

... and I should say the more I look at this, the more I favour Torcross !!

Looking in 1841 & 1851 cencus - established PEPPERELL familes are certainly in the Stokenham/Torcross area.

example
1841
Roger Pepperell abt 1761 Devon, England Stokenham, Devon
Jane Pepperell abt 1786 Devon, England Stokenham, Devon
Philip Pepperell abt 1786 Devon, England Stokenham, Devon
Saml Pepperell abt 1786 Devon, England Stokenham, Devon
Jane Pepperell abt 1811 Devon, England Stokenham, Devon
George Pepperell abt 1816 Devon, England Stokenham, Devon
Sally Pepperell abt 1826 Devon, England Stokenham, Devon

DANCE William Henry Iron Miner 1800's

by tomsand ⌂ @, Bream, Forest of Dean, Sunday, February 21, 2010, 12:14 (5464 days ago) @ ChrisW

One family tree on Ancestry shows that Joseph Dance the Royal Marine originated from the Forest area. Baptised at Staunton near Newent on June 29th 1800, he was the son of John and Hannah Dance. John Dance and Hannah Hart were married at Churcham in 1783. They had three children in the Longdon area before moving to Staunton.

Hannah Louisa DANCE 1837 Plymouth -> Newland

by jleadbeater, Sunday, February 21, 2010, 19:16 (5464 days ago) @ Bronwen

Hannah Louisa Dance was also the Great great Grandmother of my Husband. He is a Leadbeater and comes from Hannah Dance & Richard Berrows' daughter Hannah Berrow's second marriage to Frederick Leadbeater in 1902. She had previously married Joseph Dance who died in 1898. Joseph also had been married previously to Elizabeth Wright so Hannah was left with 'step' children when he died. I don't know the full story but I think they went to live with relatives. Hannah & Joseph had 2 children, William & Clarice (Clarys/Clarissa??. Hannah & Fred had 2 children Frederick George Leadbeater & Emily Leadbeater. I still have a long way to go!! Would be interested to know which Dance you are descended from?
