George READ mining death 1879 (General)

by deangirl in wales, Sunday, February 21, 2010, 18:05 (5464 days ago)

George Brown READ of Woodside Ruardean was 51 years old when he died and was buried at Ruardean Chapel 26th June 1879. Our parents said that he died in an accident at the mine, and his son George BROWN (1869), was also affected and later stopped working as a miner.
There is no record of an 1879 inquest. Also the family lost track of his son, although we were told that he emigrated to America. Is it possible to find any details of the mine accident? There is also the emigration mystery, since there was no communication from George BROWN if he emigrated from the Forest.

George Brown (1827-1879) made a Will dated 11th June 1879. He died on 24th June 1879. In the 19th century it was common practice for people to make a Will once they knew they were dying. It is possible that George died from injuries sustained in a mining accident, or maybe as a result of a respiratory problem. At the very least it would seem that he did not die outright from an accident, which might help explain why it is not possible to find a record of an inquest. It might be worth having a search through the local newspapers for June 1879 to see if anything was recorded. You are probably aware that George (b.1869) appears in the 1881 Census but not in the 1891 Census, at least not as living in Newham Bottom. Presumably he had emigrated by this time ? In case it is of interest I am desecnded from Ann Read (b.1856), one of George's older sisters who moved to Brighton in around 1880.

Thankyou very much Matt. My relative is Ellen READ (1861) a daughter of George READ (1828) and Jane TINGLE (1828). Ann READ (1856)was her older sister and I would welcome any further information about her. I knew her other sister Jane Ann READ (Sept 1854) who moved to Brighton and married George W.BATCHELOR, a manager at the Royal Pavilion. I often confuse the two Ann READs; I hope I have got it right. And was there a local paper for the Forest in 1879?

George READ mining death 1879

by Matt, Tuesday, February 23, 2010, 19:32 (5462 days ago) @ deangirl in wales

First of all thank you to Slowhands who always comes up trumps with tips and advice. I hope the links he has given you will help you to find out more about George senior.

Your post is very interesting for me because you have answered a question that I thought I would never get to ask ! In my family history folder I have pictures of 'Uncle Batchelor' who is described as the husband of one of my grandfather's aunts. Thanks to you I can know place Uncle Batchelor as the husband of Jane Ann Read...

I have Ellen Read noted down as Helen or Hellen Read but I presume this must have been a transcription error. I am afraid I don't know anything further about Ellen. So far as Ann READ (1856) is concerned, she too moved to Brighton and married Leonard Pirie there in 1885. In the 1881 Census I believe I discovered Ann working at the Grand Hotel in Brighton. I say believe because her name is given as JANE READE, but all the other details about her fitted with what I knew, not least her place of birth (Woodside) and her age, 25 years. Why she would have changed her name I have yet to discover. But now, with your information to hand, it is possible that this woman was in fact Jane Ann READ. Have you found a reference to Jane Ann in the 1881 Census? I don't think I found Ellen in the 1881 Census - did you ?

I have photos of Jane Tingle, Ann Read and of course Uncle Batchelor. If you would like copies please let me know.

Jane Ann & Ann READ

by reporter, Tuesday, February 23, 2010, 20:28 (5462 days ago) @ Matt

Matt - The Ann, sister of Jane Ann, was bn 1856. The Ann who married Leonard Pirie is listed on 1891/1901 censuses as bn 1865/6....she is possibly Ann Sophia, daughter of a Jane Maria who was a widow on 1871 census.

Any chance of putting the pics you have onto the site, please? George Brown Read was a 2nd cou of mine.

Cheers
Bob

Bob,

Once I put my post up I thought, actually... it would be better to put the photos on the site ! I will get them scanned in and sent off as soon as I can.

So far as Ann READ (b.1856) and Leonard PIRIE (b.1862) are concerned, I recall that on the 1901 Census they were both shown as 36 years old when in fact they were nearer 45 and 39 respectively. I have their marriage certificate which confirms that when they married in January 1885 they were 28 and 23 years respectively. The record on the 1901 census is wrong, but it is a good example of the mistakes that can occur even on something as official as the census return. I have no doubt that Ann READ was married to Leonard PIRIE - I have too much (other) evidence to think otherwise !

Bob,

You're telling me ! But I suppose that's part of the fun of family history research...

Thank you Slowhands for your very useful summary. Looking at this I am sure I have not seen the data for the 1891 Census before because I don't recall seeing that Leonard Pirie's date of birth was given at this time as 1856! The lack of consistency, noted by also by Bob, makes it very difficult to make any assumptions as to why age records varied so much.

As a footnote, Ruth PIRIE and her half sister Dorothy moved from Brighton to the Forest at some point; Ruth married Joe MALSOM, whilst I understand that Dorothy worked for many years at the Dilke Hospital (not sure if she married). I have a photo of Ruth and Joe outside their cottage in Crossways, taken between the Wars, which I'll also scan and submit.

Annie Ruth MALSOM nee PIRIE 1885 - 1965

by Matt, Monday, March 01, 2010, 18:46 (5456 days ago) @ slowhands

I know very little about Annie Ruth and Joe Malsom, only that according to their memorial in Ruardean churchyard, Annie Ruth died in 1965 aged 79 years and Joe died in 1961 aged 63. It is possible that Frederick George Malsom was known as Joe?

There is no record of an 1879 inquest

His death is not recorded on the Roll of Honour - so either he has been overlooked , or he was injuried in an accident and died some time later ....
